In a letter clearly written to dispel any suspicion of suicide, McSwiney begins: 'My dear Bower | I write to offer you mhy sincerest sympathy on the death of your brother Denis, which occurred through the accidental discharge of his revolver that he had taken up to unload prior to packing it up - he was to have started from Peshawar that very day to rejoin his regiment en route to England on a year's well earned furlo', which he had been looking forward to with so much delight. [last eleven words underlined] He like many other men on the N.W.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, on lighty-aged and creased paper, with a few short closed tears. Printed in blue and black. The circular reads: 'Argentine Centenary 1910. | British Memorial. | It has been decided by the British Community to celebrate the Argentine Centenary in 1910, and that the form should take the presentation of a Memorial Clock Tower, to be erected in a suitable place. | Subscriptions towards the above object are solicited andn may be forwarded to Mr. A. C. Allen, London Manager of the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway, River Plate House, Finsbury Circus, London.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. He begins: 'My dear Mrs. Roper - | I have been rather long in fulfilling my promise to write - but I must lay all the blame on this most attractive International from which I can hardly tear myself away! My journey was a very pleasant one on Tuesday with agreeable fellow-passengers, there was another Bouquet besides mine in the carriage - but tell dear Annie it would bear no comparison with mine!

57pp., 4to. In ruled notebook, with marbled boards and brown cloth spine. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. A light, observant account of a holiday, with details of her pastimes, the individuals she encounters, social engagements. First page headed 'Trip to Singapore Oct. 1967'. The first entry begins: '21st Oct. Left Jburg by train at 6.30 PM Ben [her husband] saw me off - gave me a box of Lindt chocs! but still could not refrain from pointing out how expensive they were.

Both 4to, in identical green printed wraps. Both issues in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with slight chipping and wear to wraps. Same illustration of two women looking out from the deck of a ship on front wrap of both issues, and same advertisements on inside covers and back. The first issue has 'SPECIMEN.' stamped in red on the front. First issue: frontispiece and 50pp., preceded by four pages of advertisements and leaf carrying an address to the public from the publishers, and succeeded by leaf whose recto is headed 'Gardening for September' and whose verso is headed 'New Books.

2pp., 12mo. On paper with mourning border. Headed by Gladstone 'Private'. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The letter concerns Lord FitzMaurice's motion of no confidence in the government, held in the House of Commons the following day. (The resolution, which had been introduced following British reversals in the Boer War, was defeated by 352 votes to 139.) Gladstone writes that he hopes that he was not 'too "stiff"' with Evans. 'The situation at the time was a bit acute, 70 men asking for that wh. I knew to be impossible.

14pp., 12mo. The first 11pp. are addressed to his mother and signed, and the last 3pp. to his father and not signed (possibly indicating that a continuation is lacking). In fair condition, on aged paper, with the last leaf worn and creased. He explains his situation at the beginning of the letter: 'First of all you may see from my address above that I am in Santos, & secondly from the more cleanly appearance of the letter that I am not in the woods. - Would that I were back again for ever since I have been here I have been ill [...] On the 11th.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper, with small rust hole to second leaf affecting two words of text. He begins in the hope that she is 'quite well & Plenty of Business'. He reports the death of his mother the previous may: 'she only lasted 5 Months after I left her'.

Eight pages, 4to, stapled as issued, good condition, comprising an article by Nan Green entitled "Venezuela", starting point, its oil wealth.

Malaysian original: vi+21pp., 8vo. English translation: vi+17pp., 8vo. Both printed in same layout and format, and both in red and black printed card wraps. Foreword, dated 24 October 1966, by Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs Tun (Dr) Ismail bin Dato Haji Abdul Rahman. Malaysian original near fine; English translation very good, with bumped corner.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, with slight spotting to extremities, laid down on leaf removed from autograph album. 'I am sorry that we have missed each other on the occasions you have called. My time is much occupied & it is difficult to fix an hour before 6 P.M.

4pp., foolscap 8vo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Sections on Tins, Rubbers, Industrials, Yields; with graph and table. Begins: 'Once more the Malayan shares were overshadowed by the gloom in the rubber market. The rubber price which stood at $1.01 1/2 on October 3, continued to slide until at the end of the month it had reached 88 3/4 cents per pound with the bottom still not in sight.' Begins: 'September was a strange sort of month - quiet by recent standards with hte market suspended between shade and shien as bearish and bullish-looking clouds scudded across the scene in jumbled sequence leaving investors and speculators confused and cautious.' 4to, 179pp. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. In lightly-worn original binding in blue cloth, all edges gilt, with 'THE LYRICS | OF HORACE | IN | ENGLISH RHYME.' stamped in gilt on front board, and 'THE | LYRICS | OF | HORACE' on the spine. A fair copy by Baring of his complete translation, paginated by him 5-183, without title or preliminaries (these were presumably intended to be written out on the two blank leaves which precede the translation).

Very good, lightly-aged, with the record itself (in brown paper sleeve) seemingly unplayed. The twelve-page booklet is stapled, with illustrated cover and three photographs of the Sharpville Massacre.

The drophead title reads: Sess. 1818 - 58 Geo. III. | An Act for Inclosing Lands in the Parish of South Moreton, in the County of Berks.

Mimeographed typed form, completed in manuscript, on one side of a slip of paper. In fair condition, heavily-inked on aged and worn paper. Oval stamp in blue in bottom left-hand corner: 'SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE | 9 - NOV. 1914 | KLERKSDORP.' The form reads (with manuscript additions in square brackets): 'MARTIAL LAW REGULATIONS | Permission is hereby granted to [Mrs. J. J. R. Smythe & family] of [Warren Hill] to leave Klerksdorp for [ - ] by [Motor] | [signed] [T W Cooper]'.

The 71 letters total 160pp. (18pp., 4to; 128pp., 8vo; 14pp., 12mo), and are in excellent condition, on lightly aged paper, with most accompanied by stamped envelopes, which are addressed to 'W. L. Stanton Esq | Armscote | Stratford on Avon'. The first couple of letters are on letterheads of the Hotel Tivoli, 'Ancon, Canal Zone', with the others from 1912 headed 'Casilla [i.e. postbox] 1004, Valparaiso'; and those from 1913 onwards headed 'Las Salinas [Valparaiso]'. 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with the slightest bloom to the blank reverse of the second leaf. Addressed to 'Dear Driberg'. He begins by reminding him that 'E. P.' had 'recommended me to the authorities of Cairo University for Hocart's vacant post [Arthur Maurice Hocart (1883-1939)], & had mentioned your name, at my request, as a referee'. With casual racism, he now remarks that 'the Gippies have acted promptly & E. P has just had a letter from a former colleague of his telling him that they are making inquiries with a view to offering me the post'.

On aged paper, with front cover, endpapers and first two leaves loose. The book is, as the editor explains in his foreword ('Georgetown, 1946'), extracted from Staunton's 'A Residence in the West Indies and America, with a Narrative of the Expedition to the Island of Walcheren' (London: Richard Bentley, 1834).

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Sir'. England and Ireland are not named in the letter, but subject of the letter is clear from the context. He has read 'with very great pleasure' the pamphlet which the recipient sent him. 'You are correct in surmising that for the present at least I take no part in the political question of the day - but my views show no change'.

3pp., foolscap 8vo. 60 lines. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Bifolium. Addressed, with broken red wax seal, to 'C. J. Auret Esqe. | Secretary | Board of Public Roads | Cape Division | Cape Town'. Napier understands that no tender has been received 'for putting in repair the Cross Road leading from Mr. place, to Mr. Henry Dreyer's Bridge on the Constantia Road & from the Bridge to the foot of the Hill leading to Wynberg'. It is 'very evident' to Napier 'that if some means are not immediately taken, that the heavy rains we may expect this winter will render the same totally impassable'.'s?>

Four pages, sm. folio, bifolium, small tears, fold marks, fair condition. The Introductory words continue: " Explaining the law, which requires everybody, under a penalty of £10 or one month's imprisonment, to give true answers to all questions put to them, FOR FINDING OUT ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF THE COLONY WHO WERE ALIVE ON | SUNDAY NIGHT, THE 17TH APRIL, 1904." Dual language (English.Afrikaans), with 24 points of information some addressed specifically to farmers. No copy traced.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged grey paper. Gray begins by thanking the Colonel for allowing him to have a 'cursory glance' at his 1901 biography of his father the Liberal politician Hugh Culling Eardley Childers. Gray intends to get it 'from one of the Libraries & go over it more carefully. It is full of interest to me particularly the period of yr Fathers residence in Melbourne in Govr. Arthurs time whom he found intractable but liked Genl. McArthur whom I knew well & Col Neill with whom I often stayed at Hawthorn'.
