Clifford was introduced to the laying of Atlantic telegraph cables by Sir Charles Bright, whose wife was his cousin. He served as an engineer on all the Atlantic cable expeditions from 1857 to 1866, designing the paying-out machinery used on the Great Eastern in 1865 and 1866. Timothy Hackworth is, as his entry in the Oxford DNB states, 'one of the great pioneers of the steam locomotive'. It was the view of the eminent railway engineer D. K. Clark, writing in 1855, that no single individual had, up to the year 1830, done so much for the improvement of the locomotive. Robert Young's biography of his father-in-law (he married Hackworth's youngest daughter Jane) is a solid and well researched book of permanent interest, intelligently-written and drawing on personal information.

Text: 2pp., foolscap 8vo (35 x 20.5cm.). Engraving: 12 x 16cm with corners clipped. Both items in fair condition, on aged paper. The text is cropped at the head, through a royal crest, and has rounded corners at the head and trimmed corners at the foot. The engraving has traces of grey paper mount on reverse. The text has lithograph illustrations of two side-views of four-wheel carriages with the drag applied, beneath the cropped crest and above the title 'WRIGHT'S PATENT DRAG.' Text consists of around 60 lines in copperplate.
