In the bottom left-hand corner, in a close contemporary hand, in ink: 'The site for Hungerford Suspension Bridge. | from J Sachs, 203, Strand'. (203 Strand was the address of Abbott, Barton & Co., advertising agents.) In pencil at bottom left: 'Clifton -', with the word 'River' in lighter pencil towards the centre. The view, in grey pencil wash, shows a pleasing view down the Avon Gorge, with the Bridge's two towers the only part of the structure completed.

English electronic engineer (1849-1945), inventor of thermionic valve. Widely considered to be 'the founder of electronics'. All three items good though grubby and on slightly discoloured paper. Item three dog-eared and grubby in top left-hand corner. All signed 'J. A. Fleming' and bearing the Society's stamp. ITEM ONE (two pages, quarto, 15 November 1915, University College, Gower St, to Wood, docketed): On the subject of a paper he proposes to give to the Society entitled 'The Organisation of Scientific Research'.

Red and gold label of the Hotel Inglaterra, Havana, Cuba, laid down on blank last leaf. Internally in fair condition, on aged and ruckled paper, in worn and damp-stained covers, with damage to the spine strip. With a handful of minor manuscript emendations. The tour was made in connection with Gibb's work on the sea walls at the Boca de Ceniza at the mouth of the Magdalena River, with a new port at Barranquilla.

All five items rolled up. ONE: Cloth-backed map. Title in large coloured fancy letters at head: 'PLAN OF TREVAUNANCE COOMBE'. Dimensions: 99 x 353 cm (3 1/4 feet x 11 1/2 feet). 'Scale | 4 FATHOMS TO 1 INCH'. Oval stamp of Henderson & Son, Civil Engineers, Truro, in bottom right-hand corner, with manuscript date 31 March 1885. Drawn in black ink, and coloured in blue, grey, brown and red. In fair condition, aged and worn. Striking and attractive, with neat lettering, fancy compass (with projected line marked 'MAGNETIC | 1881'), and ruled border with decorative corners.

Both maps rolled up. The first around 9 feet long and the second around 24 feet long. Both made up of panels, laid down on cloth backing. Both aged and worn, with light fraying to extremities. ONE: Original map, drawn in black ink, and coloured in red, cream, purple, pink and blue. Title on reverse: 'NORTH LONDON RAILWAY | CITY BRANCH | DRAWING NO 1', and, on labels also on reverse, 'PLAN | Westmoreland St. to Dalston | 50 ft. Scale', and '20'. Dimensions: 53 x 281 cm. Scale: 500 feet to 10 inches. Signed at bottom right: 'William Baker | March 16. 1863' and 'Waring Brothers | 16 March 1863'.

Showing the station complex - including 'Coal Stocking Ground', 'Goods Shed' and 'Stables' - on the line from Hatfield to 'L. & N. W. Station', with adjoining 'Watercress Beds', and crossed by the 'River Ver'. Rolled up. In poor condition, on aged, discoloured and worn tracing paper, with flaking away of small sections as a result of rolling, and wear to extremities.

In manuscript across front cover: 'May 1927 May 31 1929 | Morgan Motor Company Limited'. The volume gives a valuable sidelight into the finances of an iconic British firm, during a boom period in its history, and place the company squarely at the centre of a network of other firms within the motoring industry.

95pp., 12mo. In ruled account book stitched into red card wraps. 55 of the pages carry 'Particulars' of named are carefully written out in black ink, with the 'Particulars' of Screw Steamers. The rest of the volume consists of pages of pencil diagrams and calculations. The first ink page is headed: 'Particulars of Screw Steamers | No 51. 53. 53. 56. 57 & 65. | Elvira, Matilda, Coquette Edith &c'.

Six items stitched together with green ribbon. Heavily aged and with extensive damp damage. ONE: Typed agreement between The Vulcan Motors (London) Limited and The Urban Distric Council of Chiswick, dated 12 September 1923, signed by the directors of Vulcan Motors and their secretary. 2pp., folio. TWO: Typed 'Specification of Ambulance Body to be securely attached in an approved manner to Vulcan One Ton Chasis. As shown on the blue print attached.' By 'Engineer's Dept., Town Hall, Chiswick.' Clifford was introduced to the laying of Atlantic telegraph cables by Sir Charles Bright, whose wife was his cousin. He served as an engineer on all the Atlantic cable expeditions from 1857 to 1866, designing the paying-out machinery used on the Great Eastern in 1865 and 1866. He worked at Greenwich as chief engineer for the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company until his retirement in 1894. ONE: From Blackheath; 6 April 1892. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Signed 'H. He begins by informing him when he will be arriving in Wolverhampton from Euston, adding that he will be 'very glad' to see Hoult 'and the Chairman at the R[ailway]. S[tation].' He 'will have to go direct to the Agricultural Hall to give directions to my men what to do. Kerr comes down later.' He concludes in the hope that 'Mr Hook from Birmingham will come early also'. NOTE: 1p., 16mo. Mourning border. 'I have not seen a report of my address. Was it printed?'

144 original black and white photographs, uniformly 6 x 11cm. In excellent condition, in two matching photo albums of worn green cloth, one containing 89 and the other 55 images. Some of the photographs have pencil captions on the mount, giving a date and a number. Loosely inserted is a 3.5 x 8.5cm contact sheet, showing four and a half frames from a film of two men examining a chart.

A substantial collection of original documents in various formats (from fold-out folio pages to 12mo, but mainly foolscap 8vo) bound into two large 8vo volumes, with the material in the first volume foliated 1-435 (with an extra nine-page index at the front and additional material at the end), and that in the second volume foliated 436-626 (preceded by seven-page index).The two volumes in matching blue cloth half-bindings, with boards in lighter blue cloth. Stamped in gilt on the front of the first volume: 'Zoological Society of London | New Aquarium | Vol. 1. | 1922-25.

Pamphlet, 8vo: 50 pp + 8 pp of plates. Stitched. In original blue printed wraps. Minor staining. 56 diagrams in text (figs 1-56), which is followed by 17 photographs (figs. 57 to 73) as plates on art paper. Good, on lightly aged paper, with bottom corner at rear dogeared and slight wear and small stain to wraps. Presentation copy: 'No charge' in pencil on front wrap, which also carries the light ownership stamp of 'P. P. GRIFFITHS' at the head. Scarce: no copy in the British Library or on COPAC.

In very good condition, on one side each of two skins of vellum. Robinson's signature and seal in red wax at the foot of the attached skins, and the customary embossed tax stamps on both. Ruled borders in red ink. Docketed on reverse of first skin. The document begins: 'To all to whom these Presents shall come. Moncure Robinson of the City of Philadelphia in the United States of America and now residing in Bond Street in the County of Middlesex in Great Britain Esquire sends Greeting'.

69pp., 8vo, paginated 281 to 349. In brown printed card covers. With shelfmarks and labels of the Board of Education Reference Library, otherwise in fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Scarce: no copy at the British Library, and the only copy on COPAC at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

27pp., 8vo. Stapled. Without wraps. In fair condition, on aged paper, with staple hole through all the leaves. From the Board of Education Library, and with its pencil shelfmark at the head of the first page. No copy in the British Library, or on COPAC.

12pp., 8vo, spine reinforced, covers(pp.1-2) grubby, small closed tear, mainly good condition. I counted three copies of this, the first, edition on COPAC.

1p., 4to. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. With envelope, addressed by Cubitt to 'C F Stuart Esqre | 20 New Norfolk Street | Park Lane', with red wax seal and postmarks, and docketted 'Mr Cubitt. Engineer'. He has received Stuart's letter of 17 May, and has 'since seen Mr. Buchanan with all the Reports Plans Instr[ucti]ons &c &c relative to the question of interference with Lord Blantyre's property', and he will 'more fully examine' them 'during the recess of Parliament'. He has 'also seen & consulted with Mr.

The whole of the members will this year, at last, express their opinon on the candidates work, but the final decision rests, as it must under the charter, with the Council.' In the second paragraph he expresses pleasure that 'you are interesting your gallery in prints'.

Timothy Hackworth is, as his entry in the Oxford DNB states, 'one of the great pioneers of the steam locomotive'. It was the view of the eminent railway engineer D. K. Clark, writing in 1855, that no single individual had, up to the year 1830, done so much for the improvement of the locomotive. Robert Young's biography of his father-in-law (he married Hackworth's youngest daughter Jane) is a solid and well researched book of permanent interest, intelligently-written and drawing on personal information.

Text: 2pp., foolscap 8vo (35 x 20.5cm.). Engraving: 12 x 16cm with corners clipped. Both items in fair condition, on aged paper. The text is cropped at the head, through a royal crest, and has rounded corners at the head and trimmed corners at the foot. The engraving has traces of grey paper mount on reverse. The text has lithograph illustrations of two side-views of four-wheel carriages with the drag applied, beneath the cropped crest and above the title 'WRIGHT'S PATENT DRAG.' Text consists of around 60 lines in copperplate.
