ZULU

[1] + 53pp., 4to. Three full-page illustrations. Stapled pamphlet. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight rust to staples. Title on cover reads: 'The Fannin Papers. A Pioneer's Story of the Diamond Fields and the Zulu War. A stirring tale of Zulu War days on the Natal Border. Hardships of fortune hunting in the early years of the Diamond Fields.' R.

2pp., 12mo. 25 lines of text. On aged and worn paper with slight loss at head (not affecting text). The letter begins: 'My dear Sir Redvers | I am ashamed to write to you about a personal matter at such a time, but this is, I think, a very strong claim. | George Peel, son of Lord Peel, in the Oxfordshire Yeomanry, has gone out to South Africa at his own expense, & wishes to be attached to any expedition which is sent to relieve Kimberley, because his sister is there.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Sir'. England and Ireland are not named in the letter, but subject of the letter is clear from the context. He has read 'with very great pleasure' the pamphlet which the recipient sent him. 'You are correct in surmising that for the present at least I take no part in the political question of the day - but my views show no change'.

The cuttings are laid down in a contemporary landscape 8vo scrapbook (dimensions of leaf roughly 15 cm x 25), with brown calf spine and marbled boards and endpapers. The scrapbook is worn and loose, but the cuttings, although on high acidity paper, are clear and entirely legible. A unique assemblage, casting valuable contemporary light on the two conflicts from the British point of view. The cuttings, many of them extensive, relating to the Zulu War begin at one end and those relating to the First Boer War at the other.

Dimensions roughly 2.3 x 11.5 cms. On paper with three vertical rules. Reads 'chief Jonathan M. Moshoesh'. Neatly laid down on larger piece of grey paper (roughly 6 x 12 cms), docketed in a contemporary hand 'Basuto chief called Jonathan. He is the biggest chief in Basutoland after "Letsia", the Paramount Chief & next to the throne, being Uncle to "Letsia" who has no heir.' From the reference to childlessness 'Letsia' is clearly Parmount Chief Letsie II Lerotholi, who reigned between 1905 and 1913.

Card with illustrated portrait in brown and black of the Prince (in English military uniform with 'V[ictoria] R[egina]' badge), 10.5 x 6.5 cm, mourning border. Good, with a little pitting at head (not affecting image). The five postcards, all roughly 8.5 x 13.5 cm, are all very good, on lightly discoloured card. They are captioned 'The Tomb of the Prince Imperial', 'Mausoleum Farnborough', 'FARNBOROUGH HILL. Residence of H.I.M. the Empress Eugenie', 'The tomb of H.I.M Napoleon 3' and 'Residence of H.I.M. the Empress Eugenie'. Also included is a thirty-two-line biographical cutting by 'R.

Field-Marshal. One page, 8vo, slight blotching but text clear if hard to read in parts. He says that "Sir John [is] much better. Pronounced out of immediate danger. We only fear sudden excitement or [?] . . ."

British soldier (1854-1933) decorated for service in the Zulu War. One page, 12mo. Creased, discoloured and with a few pin holes. Docketed and bearing the R.S.A. stamp.
