Brailsford has been 'desired by the Missionary committee connected with this place to write you & earnestly to request the favour of yr. Services at their approaching Anniversary which is fixed for Monday Oct. 22nd. by preaching a preparatory Sermon on the Sunday eveng. Oct 21.

1p., 16mo. On bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Monsieur De la Salle | avoué'. Regarding a payment for his part 'dans l'aff. janvier'.

1p., folio. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. He is sending 'de nouveaux ordres du Roy pour retenir à Bicêtre le Ne. Esprit Prosper', and refers to a 'Pension de Deux cent livres qui serez payee par son pere'.

Both items are laid down on a leaf removed from an autograph album. Both in good condition, with light signs of age. The photographic print of Gladstone measures 9 x 5.5, with the head and shoulders image in an oval 7.5 cm high by 5 cm wide, and showing a middle-aged Gladstone with dark bow tie and frock coat, staring to the right.

Lengthwise on one side of 12 x 7.5 cm postcard. In fair condition, aged and worn, with two light postmarks over text, and the reverse carrying traces of paper and glue from previous mounting. Addressed, on reverse, to 'Miss Lewis | 10 Lower Sloane Street | London | S. W.', and redirected in another hand to an address in Essex. The message reads: 'Mr Gladstone with his compliments begs to thank Miss Lewis fo rthe presentation of her Translation and enters with much sympathy into the views she has taken of the deeper questions involved both in the Preface and the work.'?>

On 7.5 x 11.5 cm. panel cut from front of envelope. In fair condition, lightly-aged. All in Gladstone's hand, it reads 'Fettercairn Septr. twentynine 1839 | A. Colvile Esq | Craigflower | Dunfermline | W E Gladstone'. Gladstone's signature is in the bottom left-hand corner, but is merely underlined, rather than being between two horizontal lines, as customary when franking.

2pp., 12mo. On bifolium. The recipient's name has been smudged by Canning, and is illegible. It is 'utterly impossible' for him to 'do anything for Mr Blake', and he is as a consequence returning his memorial, 'which would with greater propriety be addressed to any other department of the Government than to that which I administer: & with the business of which Mr Blake's "claims," as stated in that Memorial have no concern'.

2pp., 4to. In good condition on a lightly-aged leaf of wove paper. The recto gives a list of some of Gladstone's speeches and actions on religious matters between 1834 and 1846, beginning with 'IN 1834, MR. W. E. GLADSTONE, then recently returned to Parliament, first made himself known to the public by his speech against the admission of Dissenters into the Universities.' The page ends: 'In 1846, MR. W. E.

1p., folio. In good condition, on lightly aged and creased paper with slight loss to top left-hand corner. Laid out in the typical fashion of the period, with embossed tax stamp in top left-hand corner, and Bayly's stamp as notary public on square of paper over wafer.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, on aged paper. Evidently a response to a request for an autograph. Reads: 'Greetings | from | Arthur Balfour | Xmas 1900'.

Circa, 14 x 18cm, good condition. Image of Harold Macmillan standing on a balcony with Dorothy by his side, an autumnal estate in the background. Their clear signatures are above their heads. The balcony is festooned with barbed wire- presumably Chequers with it's wartime dressing.

16pp., 12mo. Disbound and without covers. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. This item is an anonymous review of Macvicar's work, not the work itself, the author writing: 'what is proposed here is not a critique or an estimate of our author's philosophy, but a simple view of it as short as possible, the accuracy of which may be depended upon, since we have been favoured with it by Dr Macvicar himself'. Scarce: the only copy traced on COPAC at Glasgow. Now uncommon.

Card, c.11.5 x 5cm, House of Commons blind stamp top left, sl. stained from glue seeping from verso, clear and strong signature.

The collection is lightly-aged, but in good overall condition. It consists of five undated typescripts, twenty-four black and white photographs, and a few items of correspondence. The typescripts: ONE. Early draft of Longford's 1953 autobiography 'Born to Believe', published in 1953. 4to, 58 pp, paginated 1-55, 9A, 9B and 52A. Ends midway through Chapter 6. There are a number of autograph emendations, and the typescript exhibits differences from the published version. A second typed draft of half a page of text covers the earlier draft, which is still legible beneath.

2pp., 12mo. On the first leaf of a bifolium. In fair condition, aged, and with traces of mount adhering to the blank second leaf. He writes that Gladstone has asked him to thank her for sending 'the illustrated cards' issued by the Association, 'and to say that they appear to him to be suitable for the very good purpose you have in view'.

The three items in fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. All three addressed to 'My dear George' and one with valediction from 'your affectionate Father'. The letters are described below in reverse chronological order. ONE: AL. 3 October 1822. 8pp., folio.

One page, 12mo, bifolium, pin=holes at top and some marking, mainly good condition. "I hear that you are in town on your way back from Brussels. Should you have any time to spare, I should be happy to see you. You would find me at home tomorrow [...]".

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Both 2pp., 12mo, on bifoliums. ONE: 6 January 1902. Attempting to rearrange an appointment from morning to afternoon, and giving news of a lost penknife. TWO: 20 February 1902. With Richards's dated receipt stamp. Requesting that a copy of his book 'Liberalism' be sent to 'C. P. Lucas, Esq., Colonial Office, Whitehall'.

10 x 13 cm envelope. In fair condition, aged and worn, with damage and loss to back flap.. Asquith has written out the address as follows: 'Quintin Hogg Esq | 5 Cavendish Square | W'. The last two lines have been crossed out, and the address amended in another hand to '56 Westbourne St | West Brighton'. The front of the envelope has a square London postmark in black ink, and circular frank in red; the rear has two more postmarks (one London and the other Brighton. The flap has 'Home Office | Whitehall' printed on it.

1p., on 20.5 x 8.5 cm slip, headed by the Prime Minister's official letterhead. Sayer's apology is headed 'Mrs Attlee', and she writes that she feels she 'must apologise in writing for the mistake I made over the arrangements for giving your two seats to the Misses Trevor', hoping that it did not cause inconvenience and promising not to do the like again. Violet Attlee's reply, headed 'Miss Sayer', is at the head of the letter: 'Please don't worry. It is quite a relief to me to find that somebody besides myself makes mistakes! | W H A 30/3'.

1p., 8vo. On aged paper worn at extremities (not affecting text). The note reads: 'Nov 6 1790 | Srs | I received your letter by cover of Mr Herbert & will have ye honour to return an answer on Wednesday next | & am your Obedt Humble Servant | Melbourne'.

44pp., 12mo. Stapled pamphlet. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Beginning with the Prime Minister and Cabinet, before turning to the various departments. A significant artefact relating to a reforming government and an important period of British history. Present in runs held by various academic libraries, but copies of this individual issue are uncommon.

13 x 8 cm, in black and white. Signed at foot 'Thomas Roseby'. In good condition, lightly aged. Photograph of a bearded and bespectacled Roseby taken from a broken plate. From the papers of the Anglo-American astronomer Mary Proctor, with presentation inscription to her on the reverse. Roseby's entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography notes his 'active interest' in astronomy: 'With his observatory at Marrickville and later at Mosman he often gave educational evenings to church groups and students.

1p., 16mo (14 x 12 cm). In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Reads: 'Pray send me three more copies of my Egyptian Paper | C E Trevelyan | 8 March 45'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with closed tears at head and foot of gutter. Reads: 'Dear Sir, I much regret that the pressure of my other engagements makes it impossible for me to comply with the kind request of the Committee of your Society that I should become President during the next session.'

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly aged paper, in a windowpane mount. It gives him 'much pain' to refuse the recipient's 'kind and friendly invitation': 'My Sundays for 12 Months are engaged. I fear some kind friends forget I am a settled Pastor & not at liberty to accept one twentieth of the Invitations I get. I have only a few Sundays which I feel I can consistently spend away from home - & these are generally engaged several months in advance'.
