He does not have 'sufficient information' to give an opinion on the question his unnamed correspondent refers to, 'namely whether a 5 days a week system would be preferable to Miners to an uniform 8 hours a day work'. The question is 'quite new' to him, and he 'must reserve an opinion till I know more about the subject'. Later in 1892 Shaw-Lefevre would be appointed First Commissioner of Works in Gladstone's government.

His 'answer to Mr. King' is that 'under the present system the Post Office is completely under the control of the Treasury, and the Post Master General is little more than a clerk of the Treasury. The Treasury looks at the questions submitted to them from the point of view of the Exchequer and with a view to obtaining a continually growing revenue from the Post Office'. Suggestions for improvement of the service are 'continually & systematically refused'.

His unnamed correspondent has 'done no end of good by rousing the attention of the Engineering World to the Portsmouth Question'. He is engaged on 20 April, and so will be prevented from availing himself of 'Col Grey's Offer'.

INSCRIBED "Harrison Hall" (Author) on front pastedown.

All items in good condition, on aged paper. ITEM ONE: 'Blackmore Doll's Patterns | One-Piece Dress, Bonnet, Petticoat, Bodice, Chemise and Drawers.' By J. E. Beale, Ltd. Doll Department, Bournemouth. [1920s]. Pattern in pieces of brown paper, in envelope printed with instructions and illustrations. The envelope also contains an illustrated advertisement for the Blackmore catalogue, on blue paper. ITEM TWO: 'Dolls And How To Make Them' by Winifred M. Ackroyd. At foot of title-page: 'To my fellow workers of the W.V.S. (Girlington Hospital Supplies Depot).

Folio, 2 pp. Printed on one side of a sheet, folded to make a bifolium, with Baker's letter on the recto of the first leaf, and the Association's statement on it, in the form of a letter to its committee (signed by the president William Garnett; manager Thomas Higgin, and superintendent Richard Gorst), on the verso of the second. Text clear and complete. On aged and worn paper. Baker's letter begins: 'My dear Garnett, | I have just been shewn the circular issued by the Reformatory and Refuge Union to the Managers of Certified Schools, of which you wrote to me, but I cannot understand it.

The Earl of Darnley's four letters (all signed 'Darnley') total 27 pp in 12mo; Lady Darnley's eight letters (all signed 'H. Darnley') total 26 pp in 12mo. All items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Darnley's first letter, 16 September 1853 (12mo, 12 pp), is unusually blunt for the period, and revealing on the etiquette of the period. It begins: 'I trust that the change in your mode of addressing me was accidental, and I have therefore not imitated it, and have used one word which you omitted [presumably 'Dear'].

4pp, sm. folio, fold marks, one passage blotched but mainly readable. Kenmure's letter starts things off, followed by A Second Challenge by Kenmore to Nathan, itself followed by Nathan's answer to the foregoing. Apart from two insignificant variations the text, aprt from the order, is as printed in Memorabilia curliana mabenensia - Page 95. This book was published in 1830 (possibly 23 years after the poem was transcribed on the paper), and I have yet to told of earlier printings.

12mo, 1 p. On bifolium. Thirteen lines of text. Clear and complete. Fair, on aged and creased paper, with slight rust marking from hooks. Semi-literate, and redolent of the area and period. He asks Devon (not Captain Thomas Barker Devon, RN, who had died in 1846) to 'pardon the Liberty I have taken in writen [sic]' to him. He knows 'the Great difficulty that Gentlemen have in Getting good made peal [sic] Flys and firm Tied ones', and is enclosing 'a few of my Own Making & you will Greatly Oblidge me by your Trying of them'.

108 items, in a variety of formats, and including 17 Autograph Letters Signed; 14 Typed Letters Signed; 47 telegrams (on 51 leaves), a 'Statement of Election Expenses', a mimeographed 'Agent's Report. Year 1932' (4to, first 3 pp only); 3 election fliers; an 'Admission Ticket' to Davis's 'Adoption Meeting'; a printed notice by Davis 'To All Primrose Leaguers'; and seventeen black and white photographs. All but a few items laid down in a folio cloth scrapbook by W. Straker Ltd, London. All texts clear and complete, with the collection in fair condition on aged paper.

8vo, 3 pp. Bifolium. 50 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on aged paper. In original envelope, addressed by the Raja to 'Miss Cambell [sic] Brewster | The Palace | Kakina'. He is enclosing a cheque for a month's salary 'as a parting present from the Ranu & myself'. She has been 'precisely like one of the family', and her 'leaving us & the children for good, is a very great wrench to us all'. 'Bunna & Tootie' will miss her 'terribly', and 'it will be not an easy matter to get the place you are vacating, filled in suitably'.

Three pages, 12mo, fold marks, tiny closed tears, mainly good condition. He is grateful that Granville has eased his anxiety. It relieves me from all uneasiness but in case you should consider it expedient to make The Queen's gracious intentions known to the R[oyal] Ag[ricultural] Society. I mention that their Council will be held on Wednesday next for the last time before the Easter Holidays. | The wish of the Society is made know by their question put relative to Hyde Park.

First edition, 312pp., 4to, illustrated. Fine binding, blue morocco gilt, raised bands, gilt tooling, orange silk pastedowns and recto of free endpapers, all edges gilt. In lighter blue custom-made box with silk lining. Book in fine condition, box a little rubbed and marked. Presentation copy from the members of Romford Golf Club to John J. Murray, President of the Club and Past President of Essex Amateur Golf Union, among other achievments in the sport.

16mo, 24 pp. Stitched. Text clear and complete. On aged and lightly-spotted paper. Topics, under nine headings, on pp.1-9, include the 'Aims and Methods' of the Society, constitution, 'Workers', 'Training for Social Work', 'Application for Help', 'Inquiry Department'. Pp.10-15 gives a list of different charity organisations in London, with names of officials, opening hours and other details. Pp.16-17 carry a list of borough offices of 'Metropolitan Mutual Registration of Assistance'. Pp.19-22 carries a 'List of District Committees and Offices.

The 1909 letter a little foxed but fair overall, the other items all good on aged paper. ONE: Letter, 4 January 1909; Allington. 12mo, 2 pp. He is enclosing a document (not present) which will show 'that the Bishop will replace me. It only remains for me to place my resignation in your hands for communication to the Com[mitt]ee., with an expression of my thanks to them for their cordial support & of good wishes for the continued prosperity of the League'. He is 'off to Switzerland this afternoon'. TWO: Note, 20 October 1910; on Allington letterhead. 4to, 1 p.

12mo, 10 + 67 pp. In original purple morroco binding, with 'PRESENTED TO | T. E. HARRISON, ESQ., | VICE-PRESIDENT.' stamped on the front cover in gilt. A tight copy, in fair condition, on aged paper, with front endpapers sprung, and in a worn binding. Vignette woodcut on title-page, showing man working beside track as locomotive goes past.

The volume ('White & Pike's Diary 1880') is a folio, in green cloth gilt. Recently rebacked and renovated, with one leaf of advertisements under archival paper. A few leaves have had the slips laid down on them cut away or removed. Pages 1-20 and 77-93 carry advertisements, mostly for the Birmingham metal and jewellery trades. The 269 slips of rubbings, together with 37 slips with pencil drawings of designs and engravings, are mostly laid down on the rectos of twenty-five leaves of the diary proper. One loose leaf carries rubbings of designs around monogram initials.

One page, 12mo, faint marking and slightly grubby, text clear and complete. "I will be at No 10 Downing Street at 2. pm. on Tuesday, as kindly appointed by Mr. Balfour. I sent you the Slavery Memo this afternoon." Online biographies (Wikipedia and DNB) mention his activities indicating that he was anti-slavery (in the main!), but don't mention activity resulting in a Memo. According to the DNB disappointments in England drove him back to Africa in 1895. Perhaps this was it.

12mo, 4 pp. 41 lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with slight discoloration to edges. 'It was high time that in England, whence so many mountain climbers and tourists go to the Alps, a protest should be raised against the ruin wrought in Switzerland by the construction of tourist railways up the slopes of the mountains'. Deplores the 'irretrievable harm' already done to 'some of the noblest landscapes in the world, [...] easily accessible from the populous cities of Central and Western Europe, such as those on the shores of the Lake of Lucerne'.

Two letters (totalling 4to, 7pp), both signed 'Hugh R Wallace'.

8vo, 249 pp. In original black leather blind-tooled binding, marbled endpapers. The text clear and complete, apart from a few leaves at the front and end which have faded through damp damage, and one leaf becoming detached and worn at extremities. The damp has also detached the book from the binding, the glue of which has dissolved. The only clue of the location of the brewery is the reference to 'Ramsgate', below. The volume consists almost exclusively of pages of closely-written dated calculations, with pages giving number of barrels of 'Stocks pumped up' and 'left for next brew[in]g'.

Total 28pp., 4to and sm. folio, full of typing errors, some changes and crossings out, a few words added in manuscript where omitted in the typing (one corner of text still missing, p.12), fair condition, text clear and complete. It has the form of a diary but doesn't have entries for every day. It's in two halves, 24pp. of 4to, and 4pp. of sm. folio, the latter entiled in MS. "Is life worth living? Depends on liver! no.25-28". One page of text in sm. folio is on the verso of headed notepaper, "The Officer-in-Charge, Ferrar Ganj Colony, Port Blair.

Vellum Deed, Lease from Totnes Corporation to Mary Payne In Trust for Mr William Payne for 2000 years ... c.70 x 55cm, folded as usual, signs of age but text clear and complete, with town seal damaged with up to a quarter chipped off. The reverse contains a memorandum signed by the Mayor and his Burgesses: Totnes Guildhall viiith Sept.

Pam. Vol. XI. P'. The following gives an impression of the sceptical tone in which this pamphlet is written. 'Your Society is declared to be, "for the preservation of public morals," a most praise-worthy and highly commendable institution. But how do you propose to preserve the public morals?

Folio, 2 pp. On the rectos of the two leaves of a bifolium. On laid paper watermarked 'Gilling & Allford 1816'. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The first page contains a letter addressed to 'General Hall' from 'Union Office | Norwich 16th Novr. 1818', forty lines long and signed 'J Crowe'. The second page is headed 'Norwich Union Life Insurance Society | Statement of the particulars of the misconduct of the Secretary Mr Thos Bignold Senr.' It contains a six-point indictment of Bignold, totalling thirty-seven lines.

Two pages, 4to, in paper frame, faintly stained but good condition. I suppose you have perused by this time [Richard] Owen's remarks about what he calls my plagiarism of [Schwann?]. I really will take it very kind of you and Mr Irvine can continue to free me from participation in the [?] of the mistake which has given such a handle to him, and of which you know I had nothing to do.

Large 4to, [i] + 8 pp. In original buff printed wraps, with title-page duplicated on front wrap. Text clear and complete. On aged and lightly-creased paper, with wear and discoloration to wraps.
