Ist Baron Glenesk, newspaper proprietor (1830-1908), 4pp., 8vo, stained but not obscuring text, giving his reason for not seeing Yates’s “representation”, and planning a pre-luncheon conversation about Napoleon, Palmerston and the like. He is pleased to be given a place in Yates’s “Gallery”.

Politician and writer (1795-1874). One page, 8vo. He asks Lord John to send for the second volume of “the Bedford letters”. (They may be at Woburn.) He says that the “Ist volume contains some papers which wd have been worth printing if we had seen them in time”.

Corsican-Russian diplomat (1764-1842). One page, 12m,, in French, some damage to one word, traces of mounting. He accepts an invitation in gracious terms.

Extensive corrections in Clementine Churchill's hand.The notes simply acknowledge firstly, a letter about a legal matter in which she cannot intervene, and secondly, she displays sympathy for someone's son who is doing "dangerous work". Two items,

Baron Taunton, statesman (1798-1869). 2pp., 4to, good. He has been sent some material relating to the Merchant Seamen’s Billand relates it to his own views on the matter.

Statesman and man of letters (1838-1928). 3pp., 8vo, good. He and his wife are pleased that their son is happy (presumably at aboarding school). He then expresses his detestation of the sort of touristwho does not enter into the spirit of a place (in this instance, Venice).

Semitic scholar (1829-1873). 2pp., 13 x 19” and 13 x 10”, vell., folded. Deutsch leaves all his books, papers and manuscripts to Lady Strangford (DNB) who is to handle the distribution of the rest of his property. The Registrar signs the Probate which is a simple statement copies from his will.

Pamphlet, disbound, pp. 16, 8o, sl. chipped and discoloured but complete and clear.

Editor of "Portraits ef the Nobility" and "Portraits of the children of the nobility" (1838). Three pages, 4to, small tears on folds but good condition. She promises Miss Therrison some autographs [perhaps the poets she edited for the above-mentioned book?] and declines an invitation on behalf of her son. She finds her current home "salubrious" for her children and herself. "John likes his occupations here and has received the most flattering letters of approval from the D. of Rutland." She concludes with the cold weather there and in Hampstead.

Browning has signed his headed notepaper virtually in the centre.

Irish Unionist. Bold signature on paper c. 4 x 2".

Envelope, c. 4.5 x 3.5", foxed with small tears, but address, in pencil, clear,in Kropotkin's hand as follows: Peter Kropotkin / Viola / Bromley // Kent".

Anglo-Egyptian Administrator. Part of postcard, 4.5 x 2", part of address surviving (one side), other side, urviving words "Yours truly / John E. Gorst / 3.10.10."

Revolutionary patriot, Continental Congressman and lawyer, Rhode Island (1741-1796). Two pages, 4to, damaged and soiled but text clear and complete. Summary in different hand "1784 / Case to answer in the Estate of Joseph Warton Esq., by Henry Marchant on Ist Decr. 1784" [Warton was Colonial Governor of Rhode Island.] Marchant states the problem relating to the liabilities of Warton's widow and gives his opinion as to the circumstancers in which she was answerable to the liabilities and claims.

Mother of Queen Mary. "'Local' // Her Royal Highness, / The Princess Frederica / of Hanover / Hampton Court Palace / Middlesex". The envelope is 4 x 3", black-bordered, good condition.

French politician and historian (1811-1882). Poor condition, complete text:. "Mille remerciement de la part de Mr Louis Blanc. Il reviendra. --- I.e. he was in exile or about to go into exile.

Imperialist. 2pp., 8vo. He regrets that he cannot accept her invitation and that he will not be able to meet the "Glazebrooks".

Chief Librarian, British Museum (1797-1879). One page, 8vo, bifoliate, sl. marked, fold marks, text clear and complete. "Mr Panizzi presents his compliments to the Lord Mayor . . . and regrets very much that a previous engagement will prevent him from having the honour . . ."

Scottish essayist, historian and philosopher. C.4 x1.5", staining from having been laid down, signature clear, no indication that it has been clipped from a letter 1.

Novelist and miscellaneous writer (1836-1901). One page, 8vo, good condition. The scheme you refer to is not mine but (originally) that of the Rev. Dr Paton of Nottingham. I have given away all the papers in connection with the movement and therefore I must refer you to him

Baron C.C.J. Bunsen, Prussian diplomat and scholar (1791-1860). He helps the Lord Mayor with his plans for returning the visit of the King of Prussia in January 1842. He gives detailed information on the route and means of transport, including timings, instructs him on the protocol of contacting the Court, gives his plans for visiting the Norwich music festival, and asks for the draft of the Lord Mayor's speech to the King of Prussia. He will have prepared the paperwork for the Prussian Customs that same day.

(Prime Minister) Three pages, 8vo, very good condition. Text as follows: I have a request to make to you, with which I hope you will compy. It is that you will serve in the Royal Commission to enquire into the state of the University of Cambrige./ Professor Sedgwick & Sir John Herschel I [...?] likewise to ask to be members of the Commission - And in any nomination I may number I should wish to choose persons whose names will inspire confidence in the University.

Politician (1810-61), friend and supporter of Florence Nightingale. 4 pp, 12mo. Difficult handwriting. "[...] I feel that I cannot undertake to do what you proposed to me; in such a manner as it ought to be done to do justice to the Review and to the subject. I must therefore ask you to cut me off at any rate for the next number. I hope this will not inconvenience you." Creased and grubby.

Liberal politician and author (1829-1906). One page, 12mo. "Your bracelet is all safe and I have <?> it up." Negligible smudging to one word. With a biographical cutting attached at the foot of the note.

Politician and philanthropist (1787-1871). His correspondent has asked him if he will interest himself in the general Turnpike Act during the present session. He says that no interest has been shown in such a thing in Parliament.

One page, 12mo. On recto: "<...> 1797 of John Meheux the sum <...> / <... f>orty five Pounds for one <...> / me as one of the Commissioners <...> / <...> from Michaelmas to <...> / [signed] Hawkesbury". Docketted in pencil and in ink. On verso: "25 Decr. 1797 / The Rt Honble Lord Hawkesbury Commissioner 3/m Salary to 25th inst / £375: 0: 0". Some discolouration to paper.

Nondescript Tory politician (1780-1858). 2 pp, 12mo. "I do not feel right & am naturally apprehensive! / Should it come on - am I - after so short an interval to take the <?> remedy? I am now going out & shall return before hour - / your faithful servt / Haddington".?>

A piece of laid paper, 4 inches by 2. "<...> humble Servant / Robert Peel". Grubby and with minor discoloration from previous mounting.

Politician (1822-95), son of the Tory prime minister Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850). A biofoliate letter which has been cut into an irregular shape by an autograph collector. The first leaf, 1½ inches by 4½: recto, "Drayton Manor / Oct. 31. 1862 <...>"; verso, "<...> to the stopping of his <...>. Second leaf, 4 inches by 4½: recto, "<...> by great convenience to me & I am extremely obliged. / I am yours most truly / Robert Peel". Paper ruckled, and with glue stains from mounting to the verso of the second leaf, which is docketted.

Orientalist and Cambridge Professor (1783-1852). Two pages, 4to, responding to a request for advice for the son of the correspondent who is engaged in preparing a Hebrew Lexicon. Lee gives some solid advice but finally points out that he is engaged on a similar task. WITH: the manuscript text with corrections, two pages, 4to, in Lee's hand, of the examination for the Crosse scholarship (presumably a Cambridge prize) involving Greek, Arabic, Hebrew and Syriac.
