He was attended in his illness by 'Mr. Quain of 32 Cavendish Square', and he 'liked him much. But it was many years ago, and I forget what I wanted him for. But he was sensible & business-like.' He and his wife would have called on him 'as we came up from the Lubbocks', but she was 'too tired by two very busy days, when it came to the time'.

1p., 16mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Docketted on reverse of second leaf 'Sir H Bishop June 17th/46' (17 June 1846 was a Wednesday, so probably a mistake for the previous day). He is much obliged by her 'kind thought, in sending me a Ticket for you Concert', but it is uncertain whether he will be in London at that time, 'but I wish you, most sincerely, every success'.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Richard, who asks for the letter to beb regarded as confidential, is sorry to have to state that when Appleton ceased to be 'collector for the Peace Society, and his books and papers came into our hands, we found serious irregularities in his accounts'. Richard assumes that it is as a result of Appleton being exposed, 'and explanations being demanded of him', that he wrote to him. 'But he is now refunding the defalcations, and we are unwilling by exposure to ruin his character & prospects'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper with a couple of short closed tears at fore-edge. He states that he will derive 'much satisfaction in being allowed to join in any undertaking to do honor to the Memory of Bishop Ken' [ Thomas Ken (1637-1711) ], and subscribes for three guineas. The memorial would appear to have been a stained-glass window in Ken's church at Frome by 'Mr. O'Connor and his son', as reported in the Gentleman's Magazine, February 1845 and February 1849.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with head of the document trimmed and blank second leaf with traces of mount. He acknowledges 'the receipt of your letter enclosing a Memorial from the Committee of the Manchester Health of Towns association' and apologise for the delay in the acknowledgement, 'owing to the great pressure of business'.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with traces of grey paper mount on blank reverse. He does not think the recipient has 'chosen badly as regards the name', and is 'proud to think' the contents 'are to be dedicated to me'. In a postscript he writes: 'Can I help you in looking over any of the proofs?' Leigh had gracefully acknowledged the influence of Locker-Lampson's 'London Lyrics' in the introduction to his 'Carols of Cockayne' (1869).

In fair condition, aged and with traces of mounting on reverse. She is engaged on the afternoon of 15 June, but will hope to 'come in & see you some other time'. Postscript: 'It was delightful to meet & greet the other day!'

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Aged with with some damp staining. Geikie is glad to receive Cadell's letter, and will be 'delighted to have you on the long excursion if it takes place [last four words underlined]'. The excursion is however in doubt, as 'only five members of the Class have sent in their names and one with some doubt'. There are 'many calls' on his time, and unless more names come in the excursion will be cancelled. The letter concludes: 'I am disappointed with the want of enthusiasm of this year's Class.

1p., 12mo. On aged and ruckled paper, with closed tear unobtrusively repaired. In the author's distinctive, heavily-inked hand. He writes to inform him that he has 'the MS of the piece I wrote about', and that if it meets with his approval 'it may fill up the gap till Black Mail is completed'. He continues: 'I repeat it is a most powerful drama as strong as the Dead Hearts | Will you and Churchill come and hear me read it? [last two words underlined three times] | If so - when? | Will you drive over tomorrow???? | If so - at what hour? - Telegram back and I will be in Price and condition.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He is 'willing to undertake the office' under the rules mentioned: 'the two theatres you mention shall invariably be noticed - also the Panorama'.

On 3 x 5 cm piece of paper. Cut from letter and with some text on reverse. In good condition, lightly aged. Reads 'Very faithfully | Jos D Hooker'.

On 1 x 7.5 cm strip of paper cut from letter. In good condition, lightly aged. Close cropped and with some text on reverse.

16pp., 4to. Unbound and unstitched pamphlet. On aged and worn paper. The first page has the Wesley stamp, and is headed 'Specimen Of First Seven Plates' It also carries nine lines describing the 'object of the author'. The seven plates are accompanied by captions, and there is also an explanation regarding them.

On one side of 11 x 15.5 cm piece of paper. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. An interesting and unusual artefact of Devon social history. Reads: 'Messrs. Roberts & Carter, | To the Crier of Barum [the Latin name for Barnstaple] | 1835 | July 3rd Posting Bills, for sale of Rookebeare Estate 1s. 0d. | Crying do. 1s 0d | Augst 27th. Posting Bills for sale of Pinney Estate &c 2s 0d | Duryard 2s 0d | [total] 4s 0d' Bater's acknowledgment at foot reads: '28 August 1835 Recd the above | W Bater'.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He explains his 'great and chief excuse' for breaking his promise to call on her that morning. 'The fact is I have to give an address on Monday evening as President of the Society of Chemical Industry'.

In manuscript on front cover: 'Items marked X the property of Mrs. Wickes Exors'. Some ink emendations, and a large number of lots priced in pencil. On the subject of 'the two repayment bills', he would 'rather not part with £50.00 for some two or three months to come'. TWO: 11 December 1858. 1p., landscape 12mo. Directing the firm to give the bearer 'six (6) Artists Proofs of Millers Daughter -, which I long since promised to the owner of the Picture'. THREE: 24 December 1860. 2pp., 12mo.

With 'Index to Contents' on inside front cover, divided into 'Sheet Music' (including 'Christy Minstrel Songs and Ballads', 'Bishop's Glees', 'Varsovianas', 'Philipp Fahrbach Junr.'s Dance and March Compositions' and 'Brass Band Music') and 'Index of Music Books' (including music for organ, harmonium and concertina). This item is an anonymous review of Macvicar's work, not the work itself, the author writing: 'what is proposed here is not a critique or an estimate of our author's philosophy, but a simple view of it as short as possible, the accuracy of which may be depended upon, since we have been favoured with it by Dr Macvicar himself'. Scarce: the only copy traced on COPAC at Glasgow. Now uncommon.

8pp., 12mo. Disbound and without covers. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Refers to 'Mr. Forster's disloyalty to the Liberal Party in the House of Commons and in the country in framing the provisions of his Educational Bill. [of 1870]' Scarce: no copies on OCLC WorldCat or COPAC.

Printed on one side of a piece of 4to paper, with thick embossed decorative border in imitation of lace. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with closed tears to frail border. Royal crest at head printed in gold and other colours and also embossed. Headed: 'BUCKINGHAM PALACE. | MONDAY EVENING, 16th. JUNE, 1879.' Fourteen pieces are listed, by Mendelssohn, Liszt, Wagner (2), Gounod (2), Bizet, Max Bruch, Rossini (2), Ambroise Thomas, Massenet, Schumann and Cimarosa. Apart from Patti, Kellogg and Trebelli, the performers are 'Herr Henschel', 'Mr. W. H.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. She apologises for troubling her 'with a few very important questions referring to the Biarritz life. I mean the Butcher's shop at Bayonne you spoke to the Baron about. Where does the dear man live? Also how have you settled to keep the meat fresh?' She asks for instructions so that she may inform her cook, 'a German who speaks a few words of french & a sort of nigger English'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. A long letter, closely and neatly written, with a number of emendations suggesting that it is a draft. After a short reference to the Count's kindness to him and his friend Joseph Neave, he devotes the rest of the letter to 'the heavy trial thou has had to pass through', discussing the nature of loss with 'knowledge from my own experience, that the loss of a child is a grief into whose full depths no stranger can enter, and that words, even well-meant, when uttered at an unfit moment, pain instead of helping'.

ONE: 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, on lightly aged paper. He is enclosing a letter from 'Dr Braun in Rome', and suggests that Smyth will be able to correct the translation. 'I am sorry Dr Braun is not more successful, but he has zeal in the Cause, & will not lose an opportunity.' TWO: 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper, with remains of mount on blank page. A letter of condolence on the death of Smyth's tenth child, Caroline Mary Smyth (1834-1859).

xi + 67pp., 12mo. Disbound and without covers. The preface to the first edition is dated from 'Liverpool, 1869', and that to the second from 'Lincoln, 1871'. In the latter Goy writes that he is in 'failing health', but that 'the whole has been thoroughly revised, and much additional matter introduced. The chapter on Artificial Teeth has been enlarged, and the character of the work altogether improved.' Scarce: no copy of any edition found on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat, and none in the Wellcome Library.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Recipient not named: addressed to 'Dear Sir'. She is sending 'one line' to tell him 'how greatly all of us like the window, which was put up in the Church according to your promise before Easter Day'. She praises the 'beauty & harmony of colour', and the 'noble religious dignity of the principal figures' of the window, with 'the careful delicate treatment of every detail'.
