One page, 4to, fold marks, good condition. "Rd. Sir,/ In the high esteem I hold Dr. Doddridge's writings, I very readily become a subscriber to another edition of them; but being already in possession of his family expositor in 8[v]o (& indeed, of several of his other pieces) I can only put my name to the 5 Volumes of his . One page, 8vo, good condition, text clear and complete. "Dr. Arnold desires his name may be set down as Subscriber to the history of Shrewsbury by Rev. H Owen & Rev. JB Blakeney . . ./ Large paper". Not in Bent. Not in Besterman. Published 1825, 2 vols. (i.e. much later).

Samuel Weller Singer. Litterateur and librarian (1783-1858). Two pages, 8vo, grubby, spike-hole but text clear and complete. "You will oblige me by sending me all the numbers of the Indicator since No.1. Vol 2. by Mr Skillington who will return on Friday or Saturday. If you can sometimes send them under a Frank [underlined] by post you will very much oblige/ Yours mo truly/ S.W. Singer/ I should be glad to have the magazines sent by Coach [underlined] from the Golden Cross [two words underlined] regularly on the Ist of the Month.

Three pages, 4to, grubby, chipped, text faded in parts but readable and complete. "Sir/ On calling today at Mr Jefferies's [sic] Shop, to pay for & take away a Suetonius [underlined] & a Sallust [underlined] which he bought (after giving his name)[parenthesis underlined] desired to be set apart for him, a few weeks ago. Sir John Henderson, was to his great Surprise, told by Mr Jeferies's Shop=man, that the two books in question were Sold by Mr Jefferies to some other person [phrase underlined from "to"] & could not be found.

One page, c.6 x 4", trimmed or part of page, edges discoloured, spike-hole, but text clear, possibly incomplete. "Mr Jeffery willl please to pay for the following Books Viz./ Plutarch's Lives £1-2/ Grose's[?] Ethics --6[s]/ F[?]uller's Thinking 4[s]/ ,Sketches?> -2[s]/ Bi[e?]ntons[sic] Characters 3-6/ Browne's Morals 2.6//£2= =/ RichBorough [??= in Kent, perhaps Parsons there?]" Vertically written in a different hand, "Acct the Contents/ W[?]. Parsons".

Printer to a publisher. One page, 8vo, some marks, mainly good. "Sir/ You must be quite aware that it is not usual for a Printer to be sent about to seek Payment out of the proceeds of a work./ I must again request that you [underlined] will arrange the settlement, which has already been deferred far beyond the time." There is an Arthur Taylor in Brown (i.e -see also Todd - good info.

Book Collector. One page, 4to, discoloured, sl. chipped, fold marks, mainly good, clear text. "Mr. Watson Taylor requests Mr Triphook to send him down Ld Byron's new Work as soon as it comes out. enquiring first whether he is in Town at the time. He also wishes to have "Hints on the formation of Gardens & pleasure Grounds royal 4to coloured 3 gs. - at Gale & Jenners also the Rejected Addresses on drawing paper hot pressed - 10/6d.

House Governor of George Heriot's Hospital (Boase)(1796 or 7-1857). One page, 4to, edges discoloured, fold marks, text clear and complete. "My dear Sir,/ I have been expecting to see you in Holland once more but have been disappointed. Nothing of a domestic nature, I hope, has prevented you. Thinking I wd. have seen you here I always delayed writing which otherwise I shd. have done to thank you (as I now cordially do) for the three excellent volumes which you were so kind as send to our Library. By & bye I purpose printing a catalogue of the Library, with the names of the Donors.

One page, 8vo, some staining but text clear and complete. "Lady Northampton desires Mr Jeffery will call at Mrs Norman's No 11 Charlotte St Bedford Square for the books he sent to her yesterday, as they are not those she wished for , at present she does not wish any other books sent to her".

Officer of Archaeologia Cambrensis. Two pages, 8vo, Carnarvon, 18 Dec. <[18]58?>, text clear and complete, if illegible at times. "I am desirous of procuring the following Books [prob. separate sheet - lost]: - and of negociating with you for them: on the footing that I should have credit for them, you charging me your usual commission, or interest, upon this account over and above what you would charge for cash. / could procure them for me at your leisure <??> you might find pretty satisfactory opportunities: - [page 2] but the sooner I could get them I should say the better.

One page, 4to trimmed (loss of text perhaps), otherwise, text clear. In top righthand corner "London 577" (invoice number?). Books listed: "Horsbys [Hornby?] 9 Sermons <?>------10--6/ Britsh Review 13-14-15------18/ Debretts Perage 2 -------1.4--/ Binding Baileys P. Miscellaneous writer (1781-1859). See also ,ention of Mitford in #2026, Whittington. (2 Feb. 1818, one page, 8vo, chipped, edges discoloured, spike-hole, text clear as follows: "I wish you would send me down by Coach, as soon as you can, 'Davison on the Poor Laws", and the 'Revolt of Islam' the new Poem by Percy B. Shelley. I dare say you will hear of the first at Mr Murray's." (no date, pm 1827) one page, 4to, small piece torn out, spike-hole, discoloration, text clear as follows: "You a note for 10£. due at 4. Months. The rest of the acct.?>?>

One page, 7.5 x 6.5" (cut back from 4to), edges discoloured, tear and small mising portion (seal torn off) not affecting clear and complete text. "Lady Perceval troubles Mr Clarke with the Inclosed to forward to <??> Sykes & Co.[not in Maxted or Brown - not a bookseller?] & Mr <?> requests the Abbe 'de <?>' Medaillons & Books may be in Mr Cs' keeping till he hears further ---"

12mo. In a quavering hand (he died the following year), he is returning two volumes of Terence to Bohte with a payment and inviting a visit from Jones. Two items,

One page, 7.5 x 4.5, fold marks, minor staining, text clear and complete. "London Decr 2nd. 1851/ Received of Messrs Grant & Griffith the sum of five pounds <?> for the second Edition of 'Wonders of Home' and completing the sum of twenty pounds to be paid me as per agreement for the Copyright of that Book./ Received,/ W. Blanchard Jerrold// £5.0.0".

Naval officer and historian (1789-1853). One page, 8vo, fold marks and discoloration, text clear and complete. "Sir/ In reply to your note of yesterday I beg to say that my portrait would be misplaced amongst the "Portraits and Memoires [sic] of Eminent Naval & Military Personages" [title underlined], besides which I have not the facilities which you require. With acknowledgements for the intended honour".

Three pages, 8vo, somewhat faint but good. "Mrs William Thornton presents her compliments to Mr Sunter & requests that he will be so good as to send her tomorrow 2. Dozn. of Letter sized Envelopes, with Quenns=Heads stampt upon them. Also 2. Dozen of a larger size of Letter Envelope without [underlined] Queens-heads.- Likewise a ver soft black-Lead pencil for making a very marked [page 2] outline in drawing, & a quire of Letter=paper of that very thin sort used for writing to France or India./ Mrs. W. Thornton would also be extremely obliged if Mr.

Which, if any? Thornton, Richard 1776-1865, merchant, underwriter, and financier; Thornton, Robert John 1768?-1837, botanical and medical writer. Or East Indian Robert? One page, 8vo, grubbly but text readable: "I beg to decline subscribing to the work mentd to me".

Four pages, 4to, fold marks, discoloration, some damage with minor loss of text.

One page, 4to, some discoloration, but text readable. "Sir,/ Please to deliver to the Bearer, Mr Clarke, the Evidence on Mr Hasting's Trial from page 1204 to page 1244 so much being wanting to compleat my Numbers." Note (for dating purposes and identification of correspondent = publisher): prob. Minutes of the evidence taken at the trial of Warren Hastings ... upon an impeachment against him for high crimes and misdemeanors, etc. [London,] 1788[-94]. fol.

Two pages, 4to, somewhat faded and discoloured but text clear apart from five words, and complete, spike-hole repaired. "The Duchess of Rutland has received the Books Mr Triphook has sent; the Prayer Books will do very nicely, only they should open rather better. - The Duchess sends the Plates, she thinks they would look better if they were coloured, the view of Rouen from the upper road to Paris should be placed between the Page's [sic] 6. and 7. the view from the lowere road, should come between Pages 28. and 29. the other may remain where it is placed. - Mr.

One page, 4to, small piece chipped off, spike-hole, edges discoloured, text complete and clear. "I will thank you to send me a List of the Books you have purchased for me and also a List of late publications.

Minor poet (1781-1829). One page, 8vo, some discoloration at the edge, but good. "Lord Thurlow returns his thanks to Mr Triphook for his obliging note; and purposes to have the pleasure of calling upon him tomorrow. Lord Thurlow especially wishes to retain the Prayer Book of Mr Evelyn, valuing it highly. He has marked 4 ["3" excised] books in this day's sale; & requests Mr Triphook will be so good as to purchase them for him.

One page, 4to, chipped, creased, small holefold marks, other damage but text minimally affected and readable as follows: "I have recieved[sic] Puttenham and Spencer safe and must request you to send me immediately "The secret history of the court of James Ist, 2 vols demi-octavo [underlined]," and two copies of Gilchrist's letter to Gifford" which I see advertised as just published. The former, and one copy of the latter are to be put <?> down to the account of Mr Mitford of Benhall [John Mitford, misc. writer, see DNB]. I hope to recieve[sic] them soon, direct as before.

See also her letter to Triphook (#2031). One page, 4to, spike-hole reaired, usual condition, text clear and complete: "The Dss of Rutland desires Mr. Wilkinson will be so good to send her a Print of herself, from Sir Joshua Reynolds's Picture the full length, & to bring it to her House No. 28 Sackville St. in the course of this [excision] day, as she is going out of Town,[.] when the Print comes the Dss desires the Person will make a Bill of it & wait for the money -"

One page, trimmed, 6 x 5", some defects but text clear and apprently complete, as follows: "Professor Wilson wishes the enclosed LIst to be set up immediately [underlined]; & a proof of it to be ready in the [shop?] [phrase underlined] at 10 O'Clock tomorro morning [underlined] as it will be wanted at 1/2 Eleven." A further instruction, "Set it up in the same [?]" is crossed out. An interesting insight into Wilson's relationship with Blackwood's printers.

Genealogist (1827-1902) and Maltravers Herald Extraordinary. Three pages, 12mo. Good, but with some glue stains at head of verso of first leaf and recto of second leaf of bifoliate. Bottom corner of second leaf cut away (not affecting text). He is grateful for the 'account of Chipchase' and is sending 'this months part of the Miscellanea Genealogica' 'per Book post'. Asks for 'notes from Registers, or monumental inscriptions &c.' as contributions. Signed 'J. J. Howard'. Postscript reads 'Are you interested in armorial Bookplates.

Saunders & Otley, publishers (BBTI), declining to "undertake the work he mentions". Originally from a larger archive, the residue of which is described in #3157 (Hewlett's papers), this and other items appear in my ABE inventory in book id#s 3124-3156.

4 pages, folio. Somewhat grubby and creased, but in good condition overall. A standard Blond printed contract with manuscript additions and deletions. Signed 'Nelson W Aldrich /' and Anthony Blond'. The work does not appear to have been published.
