wife of the 4th Duke of Richmond and Kennox (DNB).One page, 8vo, spike-hole, scissor cut, bottom torn off, but text clear and complete. "Lady Charlotte Lennox begs Mr. Jeffries will send her some English Bibles to Morrow at 12. OClock. & an Edition of Sir Charles Grandison if he has it seperate[sic]."

(1749-1829). Two pages, 8vo, good. "Mr Triphook/ I called yesterday at Cary's for a Map, & He [sic] informed, that there is an excellent English Gazet[t]eer lately published by Capper, & printed for Baldwin Pater Noster Row - I have long sought for one, & will be much obliged to you to look out for that for me - / And I am sure you can procure me the last Eton School List, now their Vacation has commenced. I wish you make Enquiry at the Heralds [sic] Office about Sr George Naylers Work of the Coronation.

Bibliographer, Biblical scholar, polemic (1780-1862). One page, c.9 x 5", small portion torn without apparent loss of text which is clear and apparently complete. One page, 4to, edges discoloured and chipped with marginal loss of text. "With a friend of mine Lieut Bodenhoff of the royal danish Navy who goes to London to visit his family, I have got an opportunity to write you a few words.- My long silence is principally occat[s]ioned by the expensive postage, having no particular news to tel you, nor any orders to give you in the litterary[sic] way. Being persuaded you allways willl receive my letters with friendship[ I am happy enough to tell you that I myself and all my family is still in good health.

Three pages plus address page, 8vo, some damage and small holes marginally affecting text (including loss of part of name of writer). "Your son addressed me in very unbecoming language this evening respectiie my Debt to you on which subject I can declare most solemnly my entire beleif [sic] up to the present moment that Mr Ranken my Solicitor had paid you in February last[.] I am particularly sorry to find it is not the case & I have not seen him since that time. He will obtain some money for me the end of next month and I hope will give you the amount of your Debt the first.

One page, 4to, some discoloration and damage, but text clear and complete. "We fully expected you the night before last but your note of yesterday morning left not a doubt in our minds but that you would have been punctual to your appointment, it is highly necessary that we should see you, therefore pray return some answer that may dissipate doubt and suspense, is very busy staining the wals of the room and has therefore desir'd me to communicate his ideas --" I cannot identify the writer of the letter of "Ireland who may be the witer John Ireland (d.1808, DNB) of "Hogarth Illustrated".

Artist and author (1770-1831).Three pages, 8vo, bifoliate, tears, fold marks but text legible and complete. "My Dear Sir/ You will have a hundred copies of my book delivered to you in boards on Friday morning.

Radcliffe Librarian. See #s2051-2.Two pages, 8vo, grubby but text clear and complete. "By the copy of Griffith sent by Mr. Bohte, Dr. Williams finds he has only the 1st. part, comprising the - All the other parts of the 2d. vol. are wanting - But Dr. W. thinks it best to send the whole back, as he wants a portion only, & is fearful he might distress Mr. Bohte, by breaking his set -- The Bibl. is received - & Dr. Williams will send it round as Mr. Bohte desires- He will mark for himself any articles he may find suitable - But the Nat. Hist.

"Sr. / I am but just now returned from a long tour in the North of England Scotland &c which has prevented me seeing & replying to your very kind communication of the late Mr Rivetts Letters [two words underlined] from Athens &c.

Miscellaneous writer and traveller in Greece and the Far East (1758?-1841), DNB. Two autograph letters signed, edges discoloured, texts clear and complete. (7 March) "Sir/ I yesterday received your new Catalogue in which I find two articles which I am desirous of having No 2634. Belon (Pierre) & 3440 Ranwolfs Travels. provided they are in pefectly good condition [underlined from "as"] [.] I possess a copy of the same edition of Belon, but it [superscript] being very much stained I should be glad to get another that is perfectly well preserved.

"I should gladly have availed myself of your obliging offer, if we had not already in the Library all the published works of Humboldt[.] They have been consequently purchased at a very high rate - But heavy as the charge must be, & inconvenient as it often is to take works in progress or at the first moment of publication, we cannot very well suspend our orders woth respect to articles of so much novelty & interest--" See #2051 for further cross-reference.

"Sir/ Having received your advertisemt. of the Antiquarian Repertory published by you in 4 Vol. at 12 Gs. a few copies of which remain on large Paper at 20 gs. I should like to purchase one or the other if you would send them to my House in St. James Square or keep them untill my return to town which will not be untill after Christmas perhaps not untill February---". Lowndes says of thenew edition (4 vols., 1807-1809 "Published and edited by Jeffery the bookseller . . .).

Father of Catherine Head, the author of work. Two pages, 4to, fold marks, good condition. "Sir,/ I have reeived safely the copies of the 2d. Vol of the Messiah, and am very much pleased with their appearance, the printing and paper are both excellent, & the work seems in every way carefully executed-/ I have now only to request that you will have it well advertised [phrase underlined] which I should suppose the more necessary at present as London is so empty- I should wish it to be inserted 3 or 4 times in the John Bull, the St.

See de Ricci, Quaritch, for Earl of Jersey, Francis Child, Osterley Park. One page, 8vo, spike-hole, sl. grubby, text readable and complete. "Lady Jersey wants to a person to come down & arrange the Library here - It w[oul]d be a work of 7 or 8 Days & requires an intelligent Person used to the <?> - If there is any ["Person" excised] one [inserted] whom you hear of or belonging to you whom you could recommend to do it be so good as to write to Lady Jersey <?> upon it -". S.M. Ellis, Ainswworth, i.159, quotes Ainsworth letter: " . . .?>

Political writer and historian. One page, 4to, some defects but text clear and complete. "I have inclosed a few observations, for insertion, if you have room, in your valuable Magazine [The Monthly Magazine], on the present State of the Poor, and suggesting such remedies . . ." He doubts if the measures he suggests will beintroduced and finds other people's ideas on the subject "either visionary or worse".

(1778-1857). Two pages, 8vo, slight tears on fold marks, sl. discoloration, mainly good and clear.

Three pages, 4to, grubby, chipped, text faded in parts but readable and complete. "Sir/ On calling today at Mr Jefferies's [sic] Shop, to pay for & take away a Suetonius [underlined] & a Sallust [underlined] which he bought (after giving his name)[parenthesis underlined] desired to be set apart for him, a few weeks ago. Sir John Henderson, was to his great Surprise, told by Mr Jeferies's Shop=man, that the two books in question were Sold by Mr Jefferies to some other person [phrase underlined from "to"] & could not be found.

One page, c.6 x 4", trimmed or part of page, edges discoloured, spike-hole, but text clear, possibly incomplete. Samuel Weller Singer. Litterateur and librarian (1783-1858). Two pages, 8vo, grubby, spike-hole but text clear and complete. "You will oblige me by sending me all the numbers of the Indicator since No.1. Vol 2. by Mr Skillington who will return on Friday or Saturday. If you can sometimes send them under a Frank [underlined] by post you will very much oblige/ Yours mo truly/ S.W. Singer/ I should be glad to have the magazines sent by Coach [underlined] from the Golden Cross [two words underlined] regularly on the Ist of the Month.

House Governor of George Heriot's Hospital (Boase)(1796 or 7-1857). One page, 4to, edges discoloured, fold marks, text clear and complete. "My dear Sir,/ I have been expecting to see you in Holland once more but have been disappointed. Nothing of a domestic nature, I hope, has prevented you. Thinking I wd. have seen you here I always delayed writing which otherwise I shd. have done to thank you (as I now cordially do) for the three excellent volumes which you were so kind as send to our Library. By & bye I purpose printing a catalogue of the Library, with the names of the Donors.

One page, 8vo, some staining but text clear and complete. "Lady Northampton desires Mr Jeffery will call at Mrs Norman's No 11 Charlotte St Bedford Square for the books he sent to her yesterday, as they are not those she wished for , at present she does not wish any other books sent to her".

Printer to a publisher. One page, 8vo, some marks, mainly good. "Sir/ You must be quite aware that it is not usual for a Printer to be sent about to seek Payment out of the proceeds of a work./ I must again request that you [underlined] will arrange the settlement, which has already been deferred far beyond the time." There is an Arthur Taylor in Brown (i.e -see also Todd - good info.

Book Collector. One page, 4to, discoloured, sl. chipped, fold marks, mainly good, clear text. "Mr. Watson Taylor requests Mr Triphook to send him down Ld Byron's new Work as soon as it comes out. enquiring first whether he is in Town at the time. He also wishes to have "Hints on the formation of Gardens & pleasure Grounds royal 4to coloured 3 gs. - at Gale & Jenners also the Rejected Addresses on drawing paper hot pressed - 10/6d.
