The duplicated typescript of the play is 79pp., folio, on 79 leaves attached with a stud. Aged and worn, with slight staining to early leaves. Accompanied by a BBC compliments slip, with the typed name of the play's producer Shaun MacLoughlin. Also present is a BBC postcard, with short typed message dated 26 July 1979: 'We are sorry but there is nothing in print for the play "Shadowfall".' A carbon copy of the typed letter from Mrs. D. G.

1p., on half a folio leaf (16 x 19.5 cm). In fair condition, aged and worn. Fifteen lines of neatly-written text, signed 'T. T.' Begins: 'I reckon Mr J Loveday, to whom my best respects, has read the Critical Observations on the Sixth book of the Aeneid, which is pretty smart upon his friend the Bp of Gloucester. But the ingenious author, in the eagerness of his assault, seems to lay himself open to attack, by asserting, p.17, that Aeneas never appears as a legislator, except in one line Aen. III. 137.' Signed at end 'T. T.', with the initials underlined twice.

Wrench was the son of a clergyman, and well educated and well connected (being presented to the Prince of Wales and staying at Chatsworth in his old age). His obituary in the British Medical Journal (27 April 1912), describes how, after service in the Crimea, 'he was transferred to the 4th Lancers, went to Madras with that regiment in the following month, and served with it during the whole of the Indian Mutiny. For his services in India he received the Indian medal and clasp for Central India. He returned to England in 1860, and married in 1861 his cousin, the daughter of Mr.

Wrench was the son of a clergyman, and well connected, being presented to the Prince of Wales and staying at Chatsworth in his old age. His obituary in the British Medical Journal (27 April 1812), describes how he went out to the Crimea in 1854. 'He had been gazetted Assistant Surgeon to the 34th Regiment in November, and joined it on its arrival in the Crimea. He served during the terrible winter of that year, and was present at the capture of the quarries, the successful assault on the Redan of June 18th, and the final capture of Sebastopol on September 8th, 1855.

He thanks Berman for drawing his attention to the two versions of the play, adding: 'I feel that in this Goethe Centenary year, when the Urfaust is so rightly being performed, some English manager should put Marlowe's play on the stage for a few performances.'

8pp., 12mo. Disbound and without covers. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Refers to 'Mr. Forster's disloyalty to the Liberal Party in the House of Commons and in the country in framing the provisions of his Educational Bill. [of 1870]' Scarce: no copies on OCLC WorldCat or COPAC.

16pp., 4to. Stitched pamphlet. Aged and worn. The lay-out is staid and old-fashioned, reminsicent of the 1880s. Very much geared to the St James's Palace market, with such titles as 'Bicycle Gymkhana and Musical Rides' by Major Walter Wingfield, 'No Army, No Empire' by the Earl of Dunraven, and 'Roulette: The Winning Rules' by 'Sperienza'. Includes various of Sir Bernard Burke's publications, and Hertslet's Treaties, as well as 'Dress Worn by Gentlemen at His Majesty's Court. The latest date within the catalogue is 1903. No other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

4pp., 8vo. Bifolium. Disbound. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. The first page, with 'Conditions' and details of publishers, is headed 'Donovan's British Quadrupeds; with coloured plates. | On the First of January will be published, | Part I. Price Nine Shillings; and Volume I. Price One Pound | Sixteen Shillings in Boards; | of | The Natural History of British Quadrupeds; | [...]'.

Both items in good condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: 22 September 1856. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Docketted: 'Revd J. E. Kempe about Annie's XG. & Tait, new Bp of London | Sep 1856'. After discussing arrangements for meeting he turns to Tait, about to be consecrated Bishop of London. 'You ask about our new Bishop. I have reason to think it an excellent appointment.

1p., 16mo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. He thanks her 'for the opportunity she has afforded him of attending her concert, which he trusts to do accompanied by his mother'. He also 'acknowledges Miss Macirone's graceful compliments to the Art which he professes'. Little is known of Miss Macerone, but on 26 October 1846 the Boston 'Musical Gazette' reported: 'A young lady, Miss Macerone, who excels as a pianist and composer ! recently gave her first concert in London. She performed Mendelssohn's trio in D, ( in which Messrs.

Robert Blatchford (Nunquam). M. Blatchford (MONT BLANC).' Undated, but certainly dating from between 1891, when the Clarion was founded, and 1896, when Fay died.

Clearly referring to his edition of Charles Lamb's letters, he begins by explaining that the 'trouble is that the size of the books will be conditioned by the circumstance that ultimately they are to go into Everyman's Library'. Even before his 'visit to America', he had assembled 'more than 250 in excess of any current edition'.

Taylor's collecting activities are described in his entry in the Oxford DNB. His collection was sold by his widow in 1912 for the massive sum of £358,500.3pp., folio. Bifolium. Tastefully-printed billhead, as one might expect, in black and red, with royal crests, boasting that the firm are 'Printsellers by Appointment to her Majesty, | Their Royal Highnesses The Prince Consort, The Prince of Wales, and the Duchess of Kent'. Also the text: 'Established 1760. | Half price allowed for packing cases if returned immediately'.

A scarce and unusual item. On one side of a piece of 11 x 15 cm paper. Laid down on 13 x 17 cm paper backing. Aged and creased, with three evenly-spaced vertical folds. The illustration, at the centre of the ticket, is captioned 'MISCUIT UTILE DULCI', and depicts two naked cherubs, one with a Mercury helmet, playing with books and lyre. Beneath, in small letters, 'E. F. Burney del.' and 'F. Bartolozzi sculps.' To the right of the engraving is a crested seal in red wax. Above the engraving: 'BRANDENBOURG HOUSE MASQUERADE | Monday the 24th. of February at Eleven o'Clock'.

1p., folio. In three columns of small print, on a sheet of 37.5 x 23 cm paper. With three manuscript emendations. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with a couple of short closed tears at margins along folds. The present item is excessively scarce. There is no record of its existence on either OCLC WorldCat or COPAC, nor does it feature in Harold E. Raugh Jr's 'British Military Operations in Egypt and the Sudan: A Selected Bibliography' (2008). The document is anonymous, but its author is clearly an ADC, and there is a strong possibility that it was Lord Edward Cecil.

16mo. 1p. In fair condition, with slight traces of glue from mount. He has received Dyer's 'parcel p[er] Coach', and informs him that his party is 'expected at Mr. Fry's' on the following day. He is returning with the letter 'all the Books you first forwarded for Mrs Jacksons inspection'.

The twenty items in this collection are in fair condition, aged and worn, and present an interesting capsule of political activism in late-Victorian Britain. The printed circular (1p., 8vo) is headed 'THE OPIUM TRADE. | London, March 17th, 1886.' It is signed at the foot by Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), and requests support from Members of the House of Commons for Sir Joseph W. Pease's resolution, during a vote on 23 March.

Married to one of the richest men in England, Lady Wimborne was lover and patron of the young Sir William Walton (1902-1983). She was, according to Stephen Lloyd ('William Walton: Muse of Fire'), 'extremely musical and Wimborne House in London became home to many musical soirées, including the private subscription concerts of the Quartet Society and even a chamber orchestra conducted by Hyam Greenabum'. P.'), discussing his conversion to Roman Catholicism [conversion 1852].

The 46 items are in good condition, on aged paper, with 33 items (dating from December 1929 to July 1930) in one bundle; and 13 items (dating from between November 1929 and July 1930) in another; the second bundle described in a typed covering note as containing 'INVITATIONS TO STAY'. An interesting collection, showing the connections between American and British medicine during the period, as well as the network of North American medical faculties.

An interesting collection, casting light on media attitudes to the British Royal family and news management in the interwar years. Dawson was clearly mindful of publicity. As his entry in the Oxford DNB explains: 'It was Dawson who composed on a menu card the celebrated lines, ‘the King's life is moving peacefully towards its close’, having modified this from what he described as "a very commonplace" final bulletin used for Edward VII.' Penn's attendance during the King's final illness was controversial: it was later revealed that he hastened his end with morphine and cocaine.

On one side of a skin of vellum (roughly 42 x 58 cm). In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Ruled with red lines, and with ornate initial capital and decorative pattern at head. In English. Signature cut away from gutter and tab removed. The document relates to eight messuages in the Parish of St Clement Danes, Middlesex; three messuages and lands in Penzance, Penryn, Madron, Gwendron, Mave, Gluvias, Scancrett and Grade, in Cornwall; and lands in Wilmston and Tavistock, Devon. Letter: 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Closely-written with 40 lines of text. In very good condition, lightly-aged, and attached to the book by a thin strip of gummed paper. Mathews writes that it gave him great pleasure to receive Hodson's letter 'a month or two ago', and that he has only delayed replying because it has 'taken some time to get into touch with Rd. Aldington'. He gives a quotation of 24 lines from a letter he has received from Aldington after passing on Hodson's 'kind appreciation'.

3pp., 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on worn and lightly-aged paper. The first page is headed: 'At a Meeting of Several Friends | to the | British and Foreign Bible Society, | Held at St. Peter's Parsonage, Ipswich, | October 5th, 1812, | The Rev. Edward Griffin, in the Chair, | It was resolved, | [...]'. Eight resolutions in small print follow, covering the whole of the first page.
