Forty-Four (44) Autograph and Typed Letters Signed (and a telegram) from (partially) distinguished people who attended the Phillipps Centenary Dinner at Stationers' Hall in 1972, usually saying more than a bald thank you. They are addressed, except in one instance - Wolfenden, mentioned below) to one or both of the Robinson Brothers (Lionel and Philip) who had made the significant and bold purchase, and presumably organised the celebration.

The eleven items in fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, with rusting staples. With labels, stamps and shelfmarks of the Board of Education Reference Library. All items 8vo, and all stapled, ranging in length from 28pp to 128pp. The run consists of the first four Annual Reports (1920 to 1923), the fifth (1924) lacking, then the sixth to ninth reports (1926-1929), and the sixteenth report (1936, with the organisation renamed the Industrial Health Research Board). The full title of Muscio's publication is 'Reports of the Industrial Fatigue Research Board. No. 12.

In fair condition, on lightly aged paper, in worn grey printed wraps strengthened at the spine with brown tape. 1862 Diary of Sergeant Browne, principal flautist in the Royal Artillery band, Woolwich, Over 425 pages. Played at the opening ceremony of the International Exhibition under Costa, having been at the rehearsal attended by Meyerbeer - good descriptions of both events - and at the Horticultural Gardens next door throughout the length of the exhibition and elsewhere (Crystal Palace, Willis's Rooms, private houses, Lord Mayor's Show "nonsensical custom").

12pp., 4to. Stitched. No covers. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Stamp, label and shelfmarks of the Board of Education Library, London. The report by Brassey, Farrant and Foster, covers pp.1-4. It is followed (pp.5-6) by a 'Table showing requirements of respective departments', a 'List of professorships and lectureships requiring endowments (pp.7); a 'First list of subscriptions' (pp.8-10) and a 'Second list of subscriptions' (p.11).

Three pages, 12mo, grubby, one or two letters obscured by marking, essentially readable as follows: He thanks him for "kind attention" and is ory "that you have had the trouble of sending a second time. I sent the MS. with a view of sparing you a second message by the hands of Mr. Bradley Sent. who was passing your House this afternoon. The Archery business shall be attended to when I return from my short excursion. I do not know the Book you mention but the 'Boweman's Glory' published by Waring of the Archery Warehouse near Bedford Square is an excellent compilation.

4pp., 4to. On four leaves attached at one corner by a brass stud. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The proposal of the 'scheme' covers the first two pages, with the first page headed with the associations name and address, with a list of the eleven members of the 'Central Committee', headed by the Marquis of Lincolnshire, and including 'Sir RIDER HAGGARD' (who must surely have had a hand in the document's composition), and the secretary E. T. Brown.

366pp., narrow folio (16 x 40 cm). 43 lines to the page. In original vellum binding, with covers ruled in blue. On front cover printed label of 'PERKS & LLEWELLYN, | Dispensing & Family Chemist, | HIGH STREET, HITCHIN.' Marbled edges and endpapers. First leaf with 5 cm closed tear. Written out in black ink, in two or three different hands, with the granting of credit recorded in red. Containing a mass of information about local history, product and price. Early entries are stamped with date, later entries have date written out.

The records of the firm of G. and G. H. Crowther, Land Agents and Surveyors, Huddersfield, are in the West Yorkshire Archives in Kirklees, which also holds other Crowther material in the papers of the Clarke-Thornhill family of Fixby Hall. Local historian Edward J.

Printed on both sides of a piece of wove paper, 30.5 x 22.5. Text clear and complete, on aged paper with slight wear and a few short closed tears to extremities. The reverse consists of a list of prices for seven types of wine ('Selected from W & A Gilbey's List of 183 varieties.') and six types of spirit ('Selected from W & A Gilbey's List of 72 varieties.'). On the front, beneath the firm's heading (with tiny illustration of the 'Pantheon A.D. 1722') and Mead's details, are the five 'views', ranging in size from 4.5 x 18 cm to 4.5 x 5.6 cm.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. With mourning border. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir, | My friend, Mr Melville, of this Office, has drawn up a paper on Bootan, the scene of our present "little War" in India, which I think would be interesting to the readers of "Once a Week" - The subject is likely to attract some attention shortly after the meeting of Parliament.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In frail state, on aged paper with chipping and closed tears, and loss at the head of both leaves. The letter is addressed to 'John Trotter Esq | The Bush | near Edinburgh' and begins: 'My dear Trotter, | My better Half having expressed our delight at being again as it were, in possession of our old friend Bush, in the very admirable representation which has, thro' your kindness just reached us, I have only to echo her acknowledgment & thanks.

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE (13 January 1934): 1p., landscape 12mo. The 'proposed article sounds the sort of thing', but Strangeways cannot accept it until he sees it. TWO (3 February 1934): 2pp., landscape 12mo. He thanks him for sending the article, regarding which he writes: 'if the musicians mentioned in it had been more important or there had been more about them, it wd. have been worth printing; but as it is I am afraid it is not of sufficient interest.' The writer's reference to 'Ranzini' is, Strangeways points out, 'almost certainly' a mistake for 'V.

An attractive and varied collection of twenty-four items from the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury', and produced by the firm for a number of clients in the wine and spirit trade. (The calling card of partner John Cheney describes him as a 'Printer in Gold, Silver, and Colours', with 'Specialities in the best class of work', and the company's high standards attracted clients from London's West End.

Printed in brown on one side of a 25 x 18.5 cm piece of cream paper. In very good condition, lightly aged. Beneath the heading is a 6 x 9 cm engraving of the machine, followed by twelve lines of description, and the prices for eleven different versions of the machine. The firms address is at the foot, with the printers' slug outside the border in the bottom right-hand corner. From the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'.

The Victoria County History volume for the County of Oxford, Banbury Hundred, describes the firm of Stone & Son as an 'important firm [...] founded by Henry Stone, a Banbury bookseller, who in 1871 started to manufacture a patent letter-filing box invented by his brother-in-law, John Cash of Coventry; first the business developed into general cabinet-making and cardboard-box manufacture, then into high-grade colour printing, and finally into fine-art reproduction.

Nicely printed on both sides of a piece of 11 x 15cm card, folded once to make an 11 x 7.5cm bifolium, with the outer covers individual pages, and the internal double-page opening in portrait. The outer covers are blue, with a cloth weave; the internal opening is matte white.

Three pieces of Victorian educational and scientific ephemera, and nice pieces of provincial printing. All three items nearly fine. ONE: 'APPLICATION for the Biological Chair of the "University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire."' Dated from Calthorpe Road on 17 August 1883, and addressed to 'IVOR JAMES, Esq. | Registrar, | University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire.' 1p., 4to. On bifolium.

1p., 12mo. Bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'T Hankey Senr'. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. He thanks him for 'the many kind favors I have received & as the Turtle season has commenced & having retired from business & resigned it to my late Cook Mr. Geo Painter of this Tavern I should be obliged by your future favors to him who will be answerable for the Turtle.' He concludes: 'I stand Debtor to you'. The Tavern was situated at 129 Leadenhall Street. Painter would also become a purveyor of earthenware pottery from the same address.

It begins: 'A merry Xmas to you & all my friends in England. I remembered you in my cups, but the liquor was only water for I have become almost a teetotaller of late, having had a little about me when I left St Kitts.?>

In very good condition, on one side each of two skins of vellum. Robinson's signature and seal in red wax at the foot of the attached skins, and the customary embossed tax stamps on both. Ruled borders in red ink. Docketed on reverse of first skin. The document begins: 'To all to whom these Presents shall come. Moncure Robinson of the City of Philadelphia in the United States of America and now residing in Bond Street in the County of Middlesex in Great Britain Esquire sends Greeting'.
