1p., 4to. In fair condition, on aged and creased laid paper with watermark '1810'. The letter reads: 'The Duke of Marlborough is very sorry it will not be in his power to obey His Royal Highness the Prince Regent's commands on Thursday the 23d of April, which he should have been very happy to have done had it been possible for him. | Blenheim | April 19th.' The only 23 April falling on a Thursday during the Regency before the 4th Duke's death was in 1812.

5pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter begins: 'Dear Freda | I think you may like to hear about your doll & the Princess Mary. The doll had a beautifully written card tied to it, saying it was the work of the youngest member of the Freeland Institute. Then it was put on a table with the basket of flowers for the Queen.

Landscape on 16 x 12 cm paper. Dimensions of plate 12.5 x 18.5 cm. In very good condition, lightly-framed. Signed in pencil 'Frank Short' at bottom right outside the plate. The mezzotint itself (a cloudy view of a bay, with shipping in the background) is 5.5 x 10.5 cm., within a 7 x 12 cm printed frame. Outside the frame, in the bottom left-hand corner, is an engraving of a pheasant on reeds by a river. The title is at the head, with the list of the twelve engravings down the right-hand side of the mezzotint, and the publisher's details beneath it in the bottom right-hand corner.

One page, 15 x 19cm, corners missing at base with loss of part of first letter of witness signature, "John Eden". Payment of "six months Annuity" payable under a certain Act (duty on Wrought Plate, money arising from sale of forfeited estates, etc.

The four letters totalling 16pp., 12mo. Each on a bifolium. All four good, on lightly-aged paper. Chatty and informative letters, in the bored tone of the English upper classes, and exhibiting a shocking casual racism. One: From Dâk Bungalow, Rawal Pindi, 20 July 1899, and Rowberry's [sic] Hotel, Murree, 23 July 1899. 4pp., 12mo. He apologises for a hurried letter of the previous day. 'I began my journey very badly by calling a high caste mahomedan who was snoring in my carriage a Scor - (pig) he got very irate.

[3] + 13 + [2]pp., 4to. Twenty-five figures in text, and photograph of Inglis above a brief biography at the rear. Stapled. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. From the Pat Hawker archive, with his ownership inscription on the front cover, and the addition by him of '& CABLE' to the title, also the note by him 'Shows Cable penetration etc.' 'RCA American Communications, Inc., owns and operates the RCA domestic satellite communications system. This consists of two in-orbit satellites plus a growing network of earth stations in major U.S. cities.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Fair, on lightly-aged and ruckled paper. The letter begins: 'Sir. | I am glad to find you can oblige my friend Mr Curzon, although I am too late, which I regret, as I should have been able to oblige certain persons who have assisted me.' He asks for 'a few separate sets of the Plates of Seals of the Sussex Cinqueports & Lewes Priory', for which he would pay 'with pleasure'. 'I had written a Title page - & a short prefatory introduction ought to be given - a leaf will be ample'. He assumes that the recipient has given 'the Pevensey Plan'.

Henry Wentworth Windsor Aubrey was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Dorset Regiment Militia on 21 April 1875, and resigned his commission three years later. He qualified as a Doctor in 1885 and practiced in Clifton, where he was a keen cricketer and golfer. During the First World War he served in the RAMC, reaching the rank of Temporary Captain (Home) on 1 December 1917. The six items (including Item Four, a typescript of Item Three) are in very good condition, on lightly-aged paper.

Six pages, 4to, bifoliums tied with ribbon. An anonymous supporter of Sir Home Popham outlines Popham's heroic career from Lieutenant on, and his surveying feats, defending him against the renewal of charges that Popham was rewarded by the Admiralty for effectively smuggling goods from India (first made apparently in 1808).

18 long letters, totalling 106pp., 4to, and 2pp., 8vo. Fourteen signed 'Seymour Fortescue' and four 'Seymour F'. Three with the year stated by Fortescue, ten others dated in pencil in another hand. The three documents mimeographed on folio paper. Part III: 21pp. Part IV: 24pp. Part V: 18pp.; totalling 63pp. All three in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with the last leaves of Parts III and IV loose.

163pp., 12mo. In a sturdy notebook, with brass clasp, covered in grey paper. Wright has written '4 | N W' on the front board. On the recto of the first leaf he gives the addresses of 'T', 'C', 'J', 'Adml Campbell' and 'Young'; and on the verso he writes the title 'DIARY OF THE WAR | VOLUME II', above the oval stamp 'SUPPLIED FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE'. He signs 'Noel Wright' at head of the recto of the second leaf.

3pp., foolscap 8vo. Mimeographed in purple on three leaves. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with marks at head and in left-hand margin of each leaf from rusted pin. The first leaf stamped 'SECRET' in blue ink in top left-hand corner.

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Waylett on reverse of second leaf 'To/ | J. M. Donnell Esq | Theatre Royal | Cork', with oval postmark in red, in two parts: 'MIDDAY MAIL | 20 AP | 1829'. According to Waylett's entry in the Oxford DNB, 'On 12 May 1825 she made, as Zephyrina in The Lady and the Devil, her first appearance at the Haymarket, under D. E. Morris. It was a successful début, but she was not encouraged by the managers, and after playing many different parts, some original, she went to Dublin.

Item One: Autograph Letter Signed from Richter to Swan. 1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly spotted paper. From the letter it would appear that in 1946 Richter was acting as one of the selectors for the 59th Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, at the Royal Academy of Arts, Piccadilly, London. He writes that he is enclosing 'the mighty deed [a book, as the letter explains], also the invitation for the exhibition at the Royal Academy valid from Feb. 13 to March 17.

60pp., foolscap 8vo. Dogeared, and with first and last leaf creased, otherwise very good on lightly-aged paper. With a few manuscript corrections (by Hyde?). The talk itself covers pp.1-22, and the session of 'Questions and Answers' pp.23-60. Typed notes in the text (Spelling?', 'Distorted', 'Indistinct') indicate that the transcription was made from a recording. Besides the questions in the latter section are pencil notes relating to the identity of the questioner ('Craig', 'Scott', 'Asian', 'Australian').

8pp., foolscap 8vo. With a few pencil emendations. In good condition. The document is divided into sections discussing MCP aims, tactics, 'Youth, Students and Schoolchildren', 'Labour', propaganda, 'The United Front', and a conclusion. 'It should be clearly understood that the Malayan Communist Party owes allegiance to the World Communist Movement led by the Soviet Union, with Communist China in close support, which aims to set up (by revolutionary means if necessary) a World Union of Socialist Soviet Republics.

2pp., foolscap 8vo. In good condition. Headed 'Secret'. Headings: 'The Hoong League', 'Founders. Symbols', 'Notorious Societies' and 'Mark of Leadership'. From the private papers of C. A. A. Nicol, who joined the Malayan Union Police Force in 1950, and in the Royal Malaysian Poilce between 1957 and 1967, 'to assist in promoting and consolidating the successful transition to full independence. During this period the Special Branch played a vital role in maintaining peace and security in the country.'

First document: 'PART E601 | SPECIAL BRANCH'. 3pp., foolscap 8vo. Creased, otherwise good. Begins with 'Definition', then description of 'main duties', 'Organisation', 'Contingent Special Branch', 'Circle Special Branch' and 'Military Intelligence Officers'. Second document: 'PART E603 | SPECIAL BRANCH LIAISON WITH UNIFORM BRANCH'. 1p., foolscap 8vo. Creased, otherwise good. Divided into three sections: 'Mutual Assistance', 'Special Branch Manual' and 'Responsibility of Special Branch Officers'. Document Three: 'DEFINITION OF SUBVERSION'. 2pp., foolscap 8vo. Lightly stained, otherwise good.

The 'Guide' is 18pp., foolscap 8vo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Divided into 92 sections, with headings: 'Agent Handling', 'Agent Security', 'Meetings and Communications', 'Arrangements for Physical Meetings', 'Telephone Communication', 'Accommodation Address', 'Live Letter Box', 'Dead Letter Box', 'Conduct of Meetings', 'Payment to Agents', 'Contact Notes', 'Scrambling and Filing of Information', 'Agent's Personal File', 'Training and Advancement of Agent', 'Discarding an Agent', 'General Comment'. Dated at end 'MAR 66'. A revealing document. See, for example: '56.

2pp., foolscap 8vo. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. Captain Begg had died at the Siege of Kut Al Amara, Mesopotamia (now Iraq), and Urquhart begins by informing the Rev. Begg that the inventory which he sent of his brother's effects has 'gone astray'. 'In order to save any further delay I am forwarding you a complete list including some things recently recovered from Kirkee Arsenal. Would you kindly point out what you wish returned to you. The remaining items will be sold by auction here.' He continues with 'a summary of what has been done up to date'.

On both sides of a piece of 11.5 x 7.5 cm card, with rounded edges, and with the reverse paginated '(2)'. A nice piece of provincial printing, in very good condition, lightly-aged. The first page headed: 'INSPECTION EXERCISE | FOR THE BRIGADE OF | BUCKS YEOMEN CAVALRY.' , and with the slug '(Seeley, Printer, Buckingham.)' at the foot. The first page carries 23 lines of commands, from 'MARCH past by half Squadrons.' to 'Wheel on Centre of Squadron, by the Right.' The reverse carries 25 lines of commands, from 'ADVANCE, File from right of threes. Front form.' to 'General Salute.

Letter One: 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. With decorative letterhead in red. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Old DD' and 'E. D. Davis'. He realises that Davis is in 'a precious state of mind', and will only send 'a few lines to exchange domestic greetings of kindliness & good fellowship from the circle of Balham to the Square in N'Castle - the waters of the Thames mingle with those of the Tyne'.

1p., 12mo. With mourning border. In fair condition, on aged paper. The note reads: 'Temple | 19 March 1853 | My dear Captain Manby, | Many thanks for your letter. I did not find your book within it, but shall be very happy to receive and read it, as I am everything of the kind emanating from you | Believe me | very truly yours | Fitzroy Kelly | Captn Manby R.N.'

The present item is a puzzle. Farington joined the Incorporated Society of Artists at the age of twenty-one, and played an active part in its affairs until his resignation in 1773.

The contract is a form (1p., 12mo) printed in English in Paris by Imprimerie Hervey, and completed in autograph by De Keyser, with his stamp. It is in good condition, on aged paper, laid down on a larger sheet on which the words 'Royal Hotel, | 26, New Bridge Street, Blackfriars' are written in red ink in a large hand. In the same hand, on the form itself, is written: 'Published separately in English, French, German and Spanish'.

On one side of a 5.5 x 11 cm piece of laid paper. In good condition, lightly-aged and with slight rusting from paperclips on the reverse. Cut from a letter, and reading: '[...] Hospital at Ventnor | Yours very truly | [signed] Richard Quain'.

On one side of piece of 27 x 38 cm paper. Aged and heavily-creased, with central closed tear. A printed document, with engraved portrait of King George IV in the top left-hand corner, completed in manuscript and signed by Wellesley and three others, with fading to the manuscript parts. The document is headed: 'To all People to whom these Presents shall come Greeting.

On strip cut from letter. Dimensions: In fair condition, on aged and lightly-creased paper. Reads 'have complied with my suggestion | Yours Trly | [signed] John Lindley'. The signature has been cut close, and the downward loop of the final letter of the signature is lacking.

On one side of an 8 x 10 cm piece of paper, cut from the bottom of a letter. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Reads: '[...] being that very many things demand my attention that have already waited too long. | Yrs. sincerely | Frank Dicksee'.
