First page headed 'The Electors and Examiners', listing the names of six individuals, including the schools headmaster Dr Goodford, and 'The Rev. Edward Henry Rogers, M.A., Fellow of King's College, Cambridge; | C. Waterfield, Esq., M.A., Fellow of King's College, Cambridge'. Second page listing the names of twenty pupils from 'Maude' to 'Wace', under heading 'Election of King's Scholars, Eton, | August 1st, 1860'.

Nicely printed on both sides of a piece of 11 x 15cm card, folded once to make an 11 x 7.5cm bifolium, with the outer covers individual pages, and the internal double-page opening in portrait. The outer covers are blue, with a cloth weave; the internal opening is matte white.

Two attractive pieces of Dickens memorabilia, and tasteful examples of Victorian printing, by a firm one of whose partners (John Cheney) described himself on his calling card as a 'Printer in Gold, Silver, and Colours', with 'Specialities in the best class of work'. ONE: Printed in gold on brownish-red marbled paper. Dimensions 26.5 x 30.5 cm. Consisting of the words 'The Works | of | Charles Dickens. | [short rule] | Pocket Volume Edition.' in large type, within a gold border, with 'Chapman & Hall, Lim.' in small type within the border at bottom left, and 'London.' at bottom right.

The seven items in very good condition, lightly aged. From the firm's archive, and produced to its highest standards. Partner John Cheney described himself on his calling card (not present) as a 'Printer in Gold, Silver, and Colours', with 'Specialities in the best class of work', and the company's high standards attracted clients from London's West End. 4pp., 16mo (11.5 x 7.5 cm). Bifolium. Printed in black, within decorative red borders, on all four sides, with the outer covers grey and the internal pages white. In very good condition. A tasteful production, with the 'Officers, &c.' on the front cover, the twelve 'Rules' on the second page; 'Club Runs' on the third page (fifteen of them, between Wroxton on Wednesday 8 June [1892] and South Newington via Milcombe on Friday 29 July [1892]. Small vignette of a frog on a penny farthing centred on the back cover.

The three items are in good condition, lightly-aged. The layout, design and typeface of the two calling cards is entirely different, although the text of both reads 'Bluthner & Co., | Pianoforte Manufacturers, | 7 to 10, Wigmore Street, Cavendish Square, London W.' Items Two and Three (the second calling card and the compliments card) are in the same typeface, but are of different design. ONE: Printed in red, with grey-green strips at head and foot, on one side of a 9 x 12 cm piece of white card.

Printed on one side of a 25 x 20 cm piece of pink paper. In very good condition, lightly aged. With 6.5 x 15 cm engraved illustration of the trolley, carrying a sign for the 'WIMBLEDON LOCAL BOARD', followed by: 'Fitted with wood naves, Drabble's patent arms and boxes, with brass oil caps, springs, and cross check spring, oak frame-work, and strong elm boards in bottom.' Beneath this the prices and dimensions, and capacity of five sizes of the trolley, with 'Extras, if required' below. The firm's address is at the foot, with the printers' slug centred beneath this outside the border.

Printed on both sides of a piece of 9 x 12.5 cm card, folded once to make a 9 x 6.25 cm bifolium, with the outer covers individual pages and the central opening a double-page spread. 4pp., 32mo (9 x 6.5cm). With shiny pink outer covers and matte white internal opening. In very good condition, very lightly aged. Tastefully printed, with the front cover within a decorative border, headed 'BANBURY | P.S.A. Cricket Club. | Season 1894.' and giving the names of the club officials, including Rev. H. Cubbon, President; Mr. Frank Lovegrove, Captain.

The ten items are in very good condition, lightly-aged. Six of the items (the three fixture lists and three of the certificates) carry slugs, with the printers' details not stated on the other four items. ONE to THREE: Three 16mo (10.5 x 7 cm) booklets, each of 8pp: 'Fixtures, 1890-91', 'Fixtures, 1891-92', 'Fixtures 1892-93'. Uniform in design, and attractively printed in green, blue and lilac card covers and papers, with the Club's crest embossed on each front cover in gold. Each pamphlet carries the following inside the front cover: 'Object.

All four items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE (8 October 1908): 'Although I am only asking what I am offered elsewhere I am willing to meet you, & to accept Twenty five Guineas for the second serial use of the two stories, - on the understanding that the transaction is for prompt cash.' TWO (16 February 1909): His terms are fifteen guineas, cash.

Three pieces of Victorian educational and scientific ephemera, and nice pieces of provincial printing. All three items nearly fine. ONE: 'APPLICATION for the Biological Chair of the "University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire."' Dated from Calthorpe Road on 17 August 1883, and addressed to 'IVOR JAMES, Esq. | Registrar, | University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire.' 1p., 4to. On bifolium.

1p., 8vo. Bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf 'To Thomson Hankey Junr.' In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter begins: 'Dear Thomson, | I give to you as a free Gift the Sum of Four Thousand Pounds & authorize you on 30th. of this Month to place that Sum to your Credit with our House by the Debit of my private Account. I also give you the one fourth Share of my two thirds Share of the Ship Elizabeth Capt.

1p., 12mo. Bifolium, addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'T Hankey Senr'. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. He thanks him for 'the many kind favors I have received & as the Turtle season has commenced & having retired from business & resigned it to my late Cook Mr. Geo Painter of this Tavern I should be obliged by your future favors to him who will be answerable for the Turtle.' He concludes: 'I stand Debtor to you'. The Tavern was situated at 129 Leadenhall Street. Painter would also become a purveyor of earthenware pottery from the same address.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Newcastle has already been informed of Price's wish to be placed in the Colonial Office by 'the Duke of Roxburghe and others, whose interest in his wefare, would have great weight with me, if I felt that I could consistently with the present claims upon me, hold out any hope of complying with Mr. Price's request'.

26pp., 8vo. Stitched. In printed wraps. With 54 x 33 cm fold-out map at rear ('Map of the World shewing the Transit across Nicaragua proposed by Captn. Bedford Pim, R.N. Being the most direct connection for Atlantic and Pacific Traffic.') and two plates ('Pim's Bay, Monkey Pt. Mosquito. Sketched as by Commander Bedford Pim, R.N. F.R.C.S. Assoc. Inst. Both items are scarce, with the only copies on COPAC (other than 'electronic resources') at the National Library of Scotland. ONE: 'The Watt Club. Instituted 1854. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Docketted 'Answered same date G H'. The letter begins: 'As the time is approaching when another instrument will be due to <?>, I should be much obliged to you if you could send me the amount of the balance due to you at the time the arrangement was made, & the different payments that have been made since'. The letter continues on the same subject. The postscript reads: 'Please mention what are the profits of the price of W. India produce'. From the Hankey & Co. banking archive.

3pp., foolscap 8vo. 90 lines of text. Bifolium. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The signature, in a different hand from the rest of the document, is difficult to decipher: '<?> | Barrister at Law'. (The Paterson family were prominent on the island.) The document begins: 'The question submitted to me for an opinion is whether Messrs Thomson Hankey & Co. are entitled to a right of way for carts drawn by cattle &c along a passage lying between a lot of land in the Town of Grenville the property of the firm, and a lot in the occupation of Mrs. V. Morrison.?>

3pp., foolscap 8vo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. The letter begins: 'Gentlemen, | I am directed to inform you that a Bill of Exchange drawn by His Excellency the Governor and the Members of the Executive Committee, on the Lords of the Treasury, for the sum of £10.822 .. 9 ..

The lecture, which is unpublished, is an interesting personal statement by a neglected Victorian painter who died tragically young. (A rather impressive example of his work, in Turneresque style, titled 'The Heart of the Hills', is in the Maidstone Museum.) The lecture is 30pp., 8vo, in a ruled notebook with embossed black wraps. In good condition, on aged paper with some wear and discoloration. Ownership inscription of 'W. G. Shrubsole | Bangor Decr. 1886' inside the front wrap. The first page is headed 'The Ideal in Art. | by W. G. Shrubsole Dec.

1p., 8vo. Laid down on a piece of card. Aged and discoloured, with chipping to extremities and some loss of text. The poem is sixteen lines long, arranged in two eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: '"Sometimes" - Althaea sighed - "in hours of sadness, | A sudden pleasure shines upon the soul; | The heart beats quick to half-heard notes of gladness, | And from the dark mind all its clouds unroll: | How comes this, Poet! You, who know things hidden, | Whence sounds that undersong of soft Content? | What brings such peace, unlooked-for & unbidden! | Answer me!

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper, with tape repairs to reverse causing staining along fold line. The note reads: 'Dear Sir | If you will come to The Star at a quarter before nine o'C., we are to be shown the picture of the Waterloo Banquet at that time at my particular request'. Salter's painting was exhibited to the public in 1841. It is now in Apsley House. As another artist of large-scale historical works Hayter would have taken a particular interest in it.

1p., 8vo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The letter begins: 'Dear Madam | As I only landed in England yesterday your two letters of May 31st: and June 9th. have only just reached me.' He thanks her for forwarding photographs, which he is returning, and informs her 'that the Isle of Wight is at present not considered a suitable climate for my wife'.

Both items 1p., 16mo, and both in good codition, on lightly-aged paper. The first note reads: 'Mr. Charles Hallé presents his respectful compliments to Lady Blanche Drummond and would feel greatly obliged if she would kindly take his lesson to-morrow at 4 o'clock instead of half past three.' The second confirms the time for a second lesson.
