Return of Casualties of the above Corps from 30th June to 22nd November, 1857, being the day on which the Garrison of Lucknow was released by the Head Quarters Army under the immediate Command of His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief. | Cawnpore, 29th January, 1858.' Signed in type at end: 'John Giddings, Paymaster, H.M's, 32nd Foot.' Comprising lists, in several columns, giving ranks and names of officers and men, dates and causes of death.

4to, 3 pp. 106 lines. On aged paper, and with slight loss to a handful of words of text resulting from wear and closed tears to most of the letter's folds. Competently and unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. On the reverse of the second leaf Rocke's original address ('at Mr. M. Lewis's [...]') is scored through, and replaced in another hand by 'at Thos Elsted Esqre [...]'.

Notebook, 7pp. used, 12mo, some staining and chipped corners but mainly good. A handwritten compilation of the commanding officers of British Land Forces at the conclusion of the Seven Years' War (The French and Indian War, 1756-1763).

12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. 47 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. As 'an intimate personal friend from 1865', Birdwood endorses Wood's application, stating that he was 'a frequent Examiner in political economy for Bombay University' between 1874 and 1880. He explains that Bombay University took in 'the greatest interest' in the subject, and 'always endeavoured to secure the best qualified examiners, - having the whole Civil Service, beside the Educational Department to select from', and that they 'always preferred' Wood.

Thirty pages, on both sides of fifteen leaves of landscape folio, with each leaf folded in to give the item a 4to shape. Paginated 389 to 418, and printed in double column. Disbound. Stitched as issued, with uncut edges. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Excerpted from the Proceedings of the Royal Society, London, 1778. ESTC citation number N72283. The first two pages comprise an 'Explanation to the Columns' which form the rest of the paper, these being detailed meteorological tables.

October 1855 | [initialed signature] | Doorga Churm Curr - | - v - | Ob Mullick | Letter from Mr Fisher -'. Difficult hand. He acknowledges to various documents relating to the case, as well as 'two Bank of Bengal notes', in a writ of Fieri Facias. Explains his requirements ('I must have one man with me to Gard [sic] my property').

4to, 1 p. Nine lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged and worn paper. He apologises for 'not sooner answering Capt Grindlay's note and thanking him for the very beautiful drawing which he sent him'. He reports that he showed the drawing to Prince Albert, 'who expressed himself much pleased with it, & admired particularly the grouping of the figures', referring to one of the original drawings for Grindlay's 'Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, Chiefly on the Western Side of India' (1826-30).

230 pages, 8vo, marbled boads, spine missing, quarter of book almost detached from rest, contents in good condition. The only evidence for the diarist's identity and rank, apart from a thorough exploration of the many names of people he gives and the references to regiments, is his statement towards the end (back in England) when he signs his name at Government House, Devonport as "Gen. Hutchinson".

12mo, 2 pp. Bifolium with mourning border. Fair, on lightly-aged and creased paper. He thanks him for the grouse ('very greatly appreciated') and thinks that 'the show at York went off first class'.

On one side of a piece of laid paper, 18.5 x 14 cm. Aged and grubby, with closed tears and slight loss to top left-hand corner. Laid down on piece of brown paper. Larger than the ticket allowing the bearer to 'Pass and Repass'. The engraved crest ('Sub Libertate Quietem'), roughly 9 x 6 cm, has above it the words, 'For the Trial of Warren Hastings Esq.', and beneath it 'Peter Burrell Dy. Great Chamberlain'. Beneath this a laurel wreath and the words 'Twentyeighth Day'. Stamford's signature, at the foot, has to its left the red wax seal, with the faint impression of his crest.

12mo, 2 pp. 24 lines of text. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Laid down on a leaf from an album, in such a way as the first line of the second page can only be read in mirror image by holding the item up to the light. Marvellously indicative of the patronising attitude of the governing British classes to their Indian subjects. On visiting Venables he will 'venture to bring with me my native servant' who 'does not require much in the way of accommodation'. If Venables 'has no corner for him' in his house, asks if he can recommend 'a little room somewhere near'.

On the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium. Leaf dimensions 38 x 22 cm. 59 lines. A small area, approximately 1.5 x 2.5 cm has been torn away, resulting in slight loss to the text, the gaps being easy to fill in ('[...] Motion b [...] | [...] It nimously [...] | [...] Mee of Opinion [...]'). The hole has been repaired on the reverse; otherwise the page is in fair condition, on lightly-aged and foxed paper.

4to, 12 pp. Stapled pamphlet. In original green printed wraps. Text clear and complete. On aged, creased and spotted paper, with rusted staples. Giving the prices ('Rs. As. P') of items ranging from 'Asparagus French tin' to 'Zymale tooth paste'. The last page lists prices for cigars, cigarettes and tobacco. Ownership signature of 'Mr. Lewis' at head of front wrap.

12mo, 1 p. Nine lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with a neat cut (not affecting text) neatly repaired on reverse. The Registrar at the India Office has informed Lyall that Lane-Poole's name is 'on the list of those to whom the India Archaeological Reports are sent'.

Foolscap (32 x 20.5 cm), 2 pp. Bifolium. 51 lines of text, in neat copperplate, followed by a list, in the same hand, of sixteen signatories. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with slight creasing at head. Clark, after whom the town of Clarkabad is named, was described by a contemporary as 'perhaps the most famous missionary in the Panjab for length of service and energy of work'. The address describes instances in which Clark has shown himself to be 'a well-wisher, heart and soul of the Indian Christians'. The section begins 'On your recommendation the Revd. Mr. Daud Singh, Mr.

[Title continued] "Published with No.1, New Series, of Cassell's Illustrated Family Paper". Sheet, folded, recto comprising four pages, sm. folio, small tear, good condition, giving an "Indian Chronology" from 1593 to 1857 (The Mutiny) and "Statistics of British India" (from population to British Possessions to Means of Communication. More than on ethird of the chronolgy is devoted to the events of the Mutiny, concluding that "The capture of Delhi and the relief of Lucknow crushed the head of the revolt . . .

One page, octavo. Very good. On paper with 'C TAYLOR' Britannia watermarked paper. Possibly an East India Company document. Of obscure meaning, headed 'List of Different Houses', and consisting of two columns (the left-hand one of sixteen lines, and the right-hand of eleven). Includes 'Moorshedabad', 'Massulipatam', 'Poona, the Money paid to Mr. Mallet', 'Ahumabad the Residency of their Correspondent's' and 'The Mahratta Army'. With 'Exd: W D' in bottom left-hand corner. Docketed on reverse of second leaf of bifolium, with reference 'No. 149. A. | Entd at Dell <?d.> | " - MS'.

4to bifolium: 2 pp. Good. Soliciting Adams's 'Vote and Interest' when he is 'enabled to proceed to a ballot', having 'lately presumed to offer myself to the Proprietors of East-India Stock, as a Candidate for a Seat in their Direction, upon some future vacancy'. (Feeling 'that their suffrages will have been very generally engaged to an earlier Candidate for the next appointment which a casualty may occasion', he does not want to 'interfere with that Election'.) He was resident in Bengal for thirteen years, and the final paragraph describes his other qualifications.

Anglo-Indian Administrator (1852-1916). Total sixteen pages, 8vo, good condition. . Subjects include: anticipation of the publication of his book, "Chitral. The Story of a Minor Siege"; the Johnson Club, political activity (canvassing), Edward Clodd, a request to be the "accredited agent" of "The Sphere" at the Front (Great War). The fifty-two items (in various formats) are in very good condition. Texts clear and complete. On lightly-aged paper. A cordial correspondence regarding the business of the Society, Holdich's close association with which is not noted in his entry in the Oxford DNB. On 21 February 1917 Holdich writes to 'accept the honour of appointment to the office of Vice President of the Society of Arts'.

Both cards plain with printed stamp and 9 x 11 cm. Both bearing the Society's oval purple stamp. Card One: He is 'leaving town on business for two or three days' and so cannot attend the meeting of the Indian Section Committee. Card Two: He will 'with pleasure support Abney if in town', but may not be there on the day.

An important contemporary engraving, apparently unrecorded, with no record of the engraver S. Pearse, or of the Comus Press (probably connected with 'The Comus', a periodical launched in Bengal in 1857). On one side of a piece of wove paper, roughly 22.5 x 28 cm. On lightly-spotted and aged paper. Discreet repair to tear which had split the item in two. A crude but accurate representation of the well and environs, with the following text beneath: 'THE WELL AT CAWNPORE. S. Pearse.| Into which the bodies of the Women and Children were thrown after the Massacre.

12mo, 8 pp. On two bifoliums, both with red oval British governmental letterhead of the 'CHIEF OF THE STAFF'. Text clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged paper. Blau reports that he is now 'fortunately well and returned to my right mind' after 'pretty bad times last autumn and winter - especially when on board ship'. He has 'mended steadily since rejoining in December' and has 'been in Simla since May doing Russian again, and am my own man once more'.
