Note: "The National Society for Women's Suffrage was the first national group in the United Kingdom to campaign for women's right to vote. Formed on 6 November 1867, by Lydia Becker, the organisation helped lay the foundations of the women's suffrage movement, furthered later by the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and the Women's Social and Political Union."

1p., 4to. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with slight damage to one corner. Wharton writes that 'Dodds, whom on my request you some time ago put on your list to be made a Gaurd [sic]', writes me word that he will be 30 years old on the 23d inst. and is told that he cannot be made a Gaurd after he has attained that age.' He asks to be informed 'how that stands, as I shrink at the idea of having him again on my hands'.

The Oxford Movement; E.B. Pusey and othersEdward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882), Church of England clergyman, Regius Professor of Hebrew at Christ Church, Oxford [Francis Richard Wegg-Prosser [ne Haggitt] (1824-1911), founder of Belmont Abbey] With: a collection of letters on the same or similar subjects from various clergymen to Wegg-Prosser, converted to the Catholic Church.[Pusey] Six Autograph Letters Signed ('E B Pusey' and 'E B P') to Francis Richard Wegg-Prosser ('W. P.'), discussing his conversion to Roman Catholicism [conversion 1852].

On both sides of a piece of vellum (approximately 11 x 27 cm). In fair condition, aged and worn, with seal removed. In English. Concerning the fulfilment of articles mentioned in a pair of indentures of the same date (not present). The various signatures include the marks of two of the parties. Scan on application.

Printed on one side of a 25.5 x 16 cm piece of cream paper. The portrait itself is 17 x 12 cm. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Printed above it is 'LIFE | FRANK MILES | October 18, 1879.' And below: '"VIOLET FANE" | Phototypie, 15, Quai Voltaire, Paris'. Inscribed at foot in pencil: 'To Mrs. Rolland from her affte. | "Violet Fane"'.

Toynbee was, as his entry in the Oxford DNB notes, 'recognized by his contemporaries as one of the great English Dantists, and a "giant of scholarship" (Oxford Magazine, 723)'. All five items in very good condition, lightly-aged. The three letters on bifoliums, and all five items in Toynbee's neat, close hand. Items One to Four with mourning borders (for his wife, who had died in 1910). ONE: ACS. 30 January 1911. He thanks him for sending 'the Gibbon reference', which he had overlooked, and discusses his 'Chronological List of English Translations from Dante'. TWO: ACS. 13 February 1911.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 'I've the vividest memory of starting at Bouverie St. 38 years ago, in 1911, & of the thrill of speaking to him (on the top corridor). The Abbey Co. was just then at the Court, so our enthusiasm about it & its works made two very shy people articulate! | Since then, how much real pleasure I've owed to him!! The News Chronicle will never quite seem the same again.'

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The first item in its envelope, addressed to 'Mrs. Robert Lynd | 14 Downshire Hill | Hampstead'. Both addressed to 'Mrs. Lynd.' ONE: 4pp., 4to. She begins by thanking Lynd 'for "The Chorus". I feel a wretch beyond redemption & there are not enough excuses in St. Ives to meet the case - I had to get those two big portraits finished & off to the Nat. Portrait Soc: & a nightmare of a time it was I thought - I would never pull them out of Hell's seventh Ditch and up to Bond St - but there they are it appears'. TWO: 4pp., 12mo.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed to 'Dear Sir and Brother'. He apologises for 'having inflicted pain' on the recipient, but reminds him that 'imperative duty towards my office, no less than the security of Francis and myself required my insisting on the possession of the Books'. Even in the 'usual circumstances of the Province' he should have been 'most reluctant to remain in a position which, to say the least of it, would have betrayed carelessness on my part', but 'in the divided and almost hostile relation in which we (more particularly G.

1p., landscape 12mo (16 x 20.5 cm). Addressed on reverse 'To | John Bowring Esqre | 6 Freeman's Court | Cornhill'. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded into a packet for hand-delivery. Written in a crabbed, difficult hand. Begins: 'Tomorrow I will send you a copy of my Character [clearly 'The Life and Character of the Duke of Wellington', which is however generally ascribed to his namesake the Earl of Ellesmere], which you will see <?> Blaquiere <?> is just now in demand. Also a work which i can only lend him. <?> The Fragment ought [last word underlined three times] to be sent'.

On both sides of a 33 x 12.5 cm strip of paper. In fair condition, lightly-aged, with tiny part of mount adhering to one corner, and the merest loss to another. 'Egerton Bry' is written in another small hand in light pencil at the head. The Osborn Collection at Yale possesses what its catalogue entry describes as a 'probably incomplete' section of the manuscript, ' purporting to be the memoirs of a certain John Fitznigel Clavering, whose career and interests bear a strong likeness to those of Brydges himself'. The Yale cataloguer is unaware that 'Clavering's Auto-Biography.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper, but with loss at foot and traces of mount on reverse. The letter is addressed to 'Mrs Ashurst Morris | Victoria Hotel | ' (the last word damaged at the foot of the page). It reads: 'Dear Madam, | Thanks for your letter. Pardon my delay in answering, but our plans have been a little uncertain. We shall not be staying in London after the date mentioned, otherwise, we should have been very glad to continue our present sojourn at your comfortable flat.

Totalling 16pp., 12mo. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. With two envelopes (both initaled 'G. L. C.') with Penny Red postage stamps and Belfast postmarks (13 and 25 January 1862), both addressed by Craik to 'John Hunter, Esq: | Craigcrook | by Edinburgh', also a similar envelope, with Belfast postmark dated 27 August 1861, addressed to Hunter at 'Robertson's Lodgings | 24 St. Stephen's Green North | Dublin'. Chatty, friendly letters in a crabbed, difficult hand. On 13 January 1862 Craik writes: 'I am very glad you have spoken to Dr. John Brown.

Duplicated typescript. 5pp., foolscap 8vo. On five leaves, pinned together. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Apparently typed up from shorthand notes of the lecture. A couple of manuscript notes were added before the item was duplicated (including the words 'Seize the object' on p.3). A reference to the response by 'Roland' to Frederick Scott Oliver's 'Ordeal of Battle' fixes the earliest date of publication at 1916. A surprising piece: combining an openness to new military ideas with an old-fashioned militarism.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He requests him to have 'a warrant issued, in my favour, for a Buck from The New Forest, as soon after this letter reaches you, as may be convenient - and that you will give the instructions for its disposal'. He gives three numbered instructions regarding the warrant's packing and dispatch, adding 'going by the Luggage train is essential, in order that the expence may not be excessive'. In a postscript he asks that the buck be 'killed & dispatched ' when the weather is 'suitable'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper, with closed tears unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Addressed to 'John Hunter Esqre | Auditor of Court of Sn.' Written three months before Jeffrey's death, the letter begins: 'My dear Hunter - I hope you do not think that I have been forgetful of you - or indifferent to your fortunes - or ungrateful for your very kind expressions - and I firmly believe feelings - towards me - because I may appear to have been slow in offering you my congratulations on your late appointment [as Auditor of the Court of Sessions]'.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with return address, to 'Mr John Jeffrey | Post Office | Deal | Kent'. At the time of writing John Jeffrey was a New York merchant, and would not return to Britain permanently until 1810; it would appear from the letter that he was returning to America following a visit to England. See Cockburn's 'Life of Lord Jeffrey', which contains transcripts of other letters from Francis to John (though none from 1795).

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. On aged paper unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Addressed, with postmarks, on the reverse of the second leaf: 'To | Dr James Hunter | Professor of Logic | St Andrews'. He begins by complaining that he has 'only this day got rid of the end of the session - and of the review - and here - for the first time since my return - a morning to myself - and my friends'. He is happy to find himself 'at home again [...] Mrs J. suffered a great deal during the voyage', but has recovered. It will give them both great pleasure 'to see you here'.

27pp., 12mo. With collotype frontispiece of memorial plaque to Sir James Francis Garrick (1836-1908). In grey printed wraps. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, in worn wraps with chipping to extremities and rusted staples. Stamp, label and shelfmark of the Board of Education Reference Library, London. Only three copies on COPAC, and none at the British Library.

2pp., 12mo. He writes with aristocratic hauteur: 'Sir. | I shall return to London on or before the 20th & I shall be ready to meet the other members of the Site Committee any day after that date & It is quite indifferent to me whether we meet at the Society of Arts or in Pall Mall | Truly yrs | W Cowper'.

15pp., landscape 12mo. With four additional pages of photographic plates ('Exterior facing south', 'The lounge', 'The dining room', 'A bedroom'). Stitched into grey printed wraps. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. The booklet includes a list of trustees and other officers, a descriptive text, the 'Regulations relating to the home', 'Form of application' (with two pages of 'rules', including 'CASES NOT ADMITTED') and 'Medical Report'. The descriptive text begins: 'The Home has been built and generously endowed by Mr. F. W.

[v] + 25pp., 12mo. In grey card wraps, with white label on front cover, carrying title in black and red. Internally good, in worn wraps with front hinge torn at head around a third of the total length. Inscribed on front free endpaper: 'with affectionate remembrance | from | F. W. Bourdillon'. The booklet contains ten poems, tastefully printed, and all relating directly or indirectly to the Great War. Titles include: 'The Coming of the Oversea Armies', 'A Lamentation over Belgium' and 'Lord Roberts'. Not common: seven copies on COPAC.

The first three letters each 1p., 4to; and the fourth 2pp., 4to. In good condition, on aged and creased paper, with three of the four letters stapled together. Letter One: 13 October 1967. She writes 'for information about my position concerning my late husband's books, and my Biography of him which Heinemann's published in London in 1962'. The closing of the firm's Cape Town office has been a shock to her. Letter Two: 4 November 1967.

Note: "Dr Edward Sieveking was a prominent member of several sanitary reform associations".

One page, sm. folio, sl. crumpled and stained, C17th hand. Another copy (BL Sloane MS. 3562, f.99, to Spedding, the "best copy") is reproduced in Spedding, ed., 'The Works of Francis Bacon', vol. XIII, p.144, with the suggestion that, though James was capable, Bacon himself could have written it. A copy is also to be found in the Harley MS., and presumably elsewhere. The Sloane and Harley copies differ in small matters from this one (one of several examples, "nobis" for "Sloane's "vobis" in 'quam nobis suspecta'). One obvious anomaly.

Both 48pp., 4to (Part II paginated 49-96). Both in printed blue wraps, with front cover carrying the ownership inscription of R. R. Lloyd. Both with stamps of the St. Albans' Architectural & Archaeological Society, and small taped label to wraps. Both in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in chipped and worn wraps.
