ASSOCIATION

From the papers of the nuclear physicist Robert Kersey Green. The collection contains periodicals, advertisements, handbills, prospectuses (one damp damaged), reports, form, invitations, two cards and a ticket. In fair condition, on aged paper, and with a couple of items carrying traces of damp. Five sets of accounts, four for Edinburgh, 1958 and 1963, and one for Garvald (see below), of which four are typed copies and one in manuscript ('Notes re 76 Polwarth Terrace'). Mounted long black and white photograph of architectural model, captioned on reverse 'SCHOOL.

From the papers of Major Reginald Kersey Green and his son the nuclear physicist Robert Kersey Green. The magazines are mostly in 4to, and the advertisements mostly in 12mo. Printed in a variety of styles on a range of different coloured papers, with illustrations and photographs. In good condition, on aged paper, except for one heavily-stained item, and another with light staining to back wrap. Comprising: ONE. 'The Weleda Journal' ('Gratis to all interested in the Weleda'), No. 1, September 1938.

Both letters 2pp., 12mo, on bifoliums. Both good, on lightly-aged paper. On both letterheads Brook has cancelled the printed address and the name of the Association's president. ONE: Regarding the renewal of Gunn's membership, 'the guinea entrance fee' being unnecessary in his case. 'I have also noted my enquiry if you will contribute a paper when convenient upon the Saxon works in your district. This will be very acceptable to us.' TWO: He has sent Gunn the proof of his 'interesting little paper with which you favoured us at Caistor'.

Letter: 1p., 4to. Bifolium. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with slight damage to second leaf, the reverse of which is addressed to 'Mr. Wm. Lovett | National Hall | 242, Holborn', with postmarks in black and red ink. Cooper begins: 'Dear Lovett | Please announce, in your bill that | "Mr.

Bryce writes that he has not forgotten Hackett's 'invitation to the American Booksellers Association's banquet' in New York, but that it is unlikely that he will be able to attend 'seems to be extremely small, so that I must ask you not to announce me as being present.

12mo, 1 p. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with slight traces of mount on reverse. Regretting, given his 'keen interest' in the affairs of the Association and of the College, that Humberstone cannot attend a meeting of the RCS Association. The influence of the Association is 'probably considerable' regarding 'the development in progress', as many members are very active in the matter.

Both items 12mo, 1 p. Both good, on lightly aged paper. Pinned to one another. Letter One: He is'enclosing two leaflets on disc manipulation'. He has a third, 'fuller and illustrated', and if they interest Milne, he will be 'delighted'. Letter Two: He had 'much rather be found right than wrong', but would 'enjoy either experience, in meeting you again'. Could see Milne's 'pictures' after easter, and hopes to have 'one or two you may like to see as well'. Dunning had served in the United States Army Medical Corps before going to England to practice osteopathy.

12mo, 3 pp. Text clear and complete. Worn and aged, with pinholes and unobtrusive repair to closed tears. The 'kindness' Wyld has 'always shewn to the Poles' makes Stuart sure that he will attend to his recommendation of 'Captain Thadeus Grubski, one of the Polish Refugees who bears a very high character'. By employing him Wyld would 'render an essential servie to a deserving man much in need of it, and confer a favor as well on this association in general', and on Stuart in particular.

Folio, 2 pp. Printed on one side of a sheet, folded to make a bifolium, with Baker's letter on the recto of the first leaf, and the Association's statement on it, in the form of a letter to its committee (signed by the president William Garnett; manager Thomas Higgin, and superintendent Richard Gorst), on the verso of the second. Baker's letter begins: 'My dear Garnett, | I have just been shewn the circular issued by the Reformatory and Refuge Union to the Managers of Certified Schools, of which you wrote to me, but I cannot understand it.

Both items fair, on aged and creased paper, with texts clear and complete. Resolutions: 4to, 2 pp. Headed 'British Archaeological Association.' A 'Requisition' having been signed by 'one hundred and sixty-two Members', the Association's treasurer Pettigrew is recorded as following a reading of this with 'a detailed account of the rise and progress of the Association, and of the nature of the dissensions which for months have diverted the attention of the Committee from the objects for which the Association was formed'. The resolutions are stated, and the proposers named as: Rev. R. H.

The three items are in fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with texts clear and complete. Circular by Crofton Croker and Roach Smith: 12mo, 1 p. On bifolium. Printed pamphlet, 24pp., 8vo,sewn as issued, wraps grubby, contents good. Inscribed Jacob Waley, [?] with the author's respects. Jacob Waley was the first president of the Anglo-Jewish Association and Professor of Political Economy at University College London.

All items freshly mounted in a photo album, very good condition. The core of the collection is a full series of membership cards for the Association of Correctors of the Press (1949-1965), London Typographical Society (1966), National Graphical Association (1967-1988). With their variant typographical features.design and colour, these make an attractive display.

4to, 15 pp. In small type. Text clear and complete. On brittle green high-acidity paper, with chipping and loss to extremities and three of the leaves detached. Begins by listing 'General Council of the Automobile Club | (appointed to confer with the Club Committee on questions affecting Automobilism generally).' Headed by 'His Grace the Duke of Sutherland'; followed, on second page by Club Committee and officers, and then (pp. 3-10) the list of members in three columns, giving name, optional address, and date of election; ends (pp.11-15) with lists of 'Members of Affiliated Clubs'.

The ten items are all in the same 12mo format, each stapled and in coloured printed wraps. Page range between 56 and 106. Internally good, with occasional chipping to the high-acidity paper wraps. Rusting staples. A total of c.4500 items, catalogued in detail by a pioneer in the field and a President of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association. Containing a mass of information about a wide range of individuals ans subjects, from 'Musicians' to 'Prime Ministers', George Gissing to George III, Lord Byron to Florence Nightingale, and Robert Browning to Napoleon Bonaparte.

4to, 1 p. In bifolium. Fifteen lines of text. Clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with thin strip of archival paper from mount adhering to the second leaf. Addressed and docketed, with postmarks, on the reverse of the second leaf. Begins by discussing a translation, then discusses a 'grant of Books': 'probably a series or two of the Repository may relieve the shelves of the society to some advantage'.

Contrasts the law on the continent with that in England, where 'an unruly girl at any age can go on the streets, and the person who harbours her is not guilty of a greater crime than if she were a women [sic] of thirty or forty [...] Will you not help us heart and soul in getting our English girls, - your daughters, remember, - as carefully protected as Belgian and French girls?

12mo, 16 pp. Stapled pamphlet. Not paginated. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Includes a three-quarter page 'Chart of the Anchorages in Encounter Bay by Wm. Light, Surveyor General'. Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and the only copy on COPAC at Oxford (where dated to 1846).

8vo: 32 pp. Pamphlet. Bound in modern marbled boards with paper label. Fair, on aged paper with top outer corner of last few leaves slightly dogeared and with reverse of last leaf a little grubby. An important speech, another edition of which exists, published by Ridgway in 1848. A reply by John Towne Danson was also published by Ridgway in 1848, going through two editions.

4to: 6 pp + [ii]. Disbound. On aged spotted paper with slight chipping and loss to extremities. Text clear and complete. Report, in small type. Inscribed by Meredith at head of first page: 'Read by Hugh Meredith, M.A. before the British Association at York. 1906.' Scarce: no copy in the British Library and the only copy on COPAC at Oxford.

12mo: 8 pp. An unopened pamphlet made by folding a leaf twice. Text clear and complete. Good: on aged and slightly-grubby paper. Scarce: the only copies on COPAC at the London School of Economics and University College London, in whose entries it is dated to the 1870s.

Manuscript note by Harold Sidney Harmsworth (later Viscount Rothermere) at head of first page: 'When Em [pet name for Cecil Harmsworth] had a long talk with the Prince of Wales - I being detained in the H of Commons | [signed] H'. 8vo, 8 pp. Stapled pamphlet. Good, on lightly-aged paper with slight rust to staples. Fair, on aged and lightly-creased paper. On pp. 4 and 5 brief details are given of the subjects of the eight films shown: 'Port Sunlight', 'Bournville', 'A Bit of Thameside', 'Letchworth', 'Hampstead Garden Suburb', 'Well Hall', 'Gretna' and 'War Seal Homes'.

It is now reprinted from the report in the NORTH BRITISH DAILY MAIL, made up with the assistance of Professor Nichol's rough notes.
