Fürth obtained his doctorate from the German University in Prague. From the beginning of the Second World War he was a research assistant to Max Born at Edinburgh University. After the war he became one of Born’s principal research collaborators, before moving to Birkbeck College in London. The archive as a whole is in good condition, on aged paper, with the text of all the items clear and complete. ITEM ONE: Quarto (28.5 x 22 cm) graph-paper notebook, with around 100 pages in German, apparently listing, with circuit diagrams, the results of electrical experiments. Occasional insertions. With stamps of the 'Physikalisches Institut der deutschen Universität In Prague', and another indicating that it was 'Withdrawn from Birkbeck College London' (where its shelfmark was 4405/100). Shaky and in worn binding. ITEM TWO: Typescript (5 A4 pages) of paper in English signed 'R. Fürth' and titled 'A few simple experiments on Aerodynamics, usually performed in the Department of Physics of Prague University'. With a few autograph corrections. ITEM THREE: Rough typewritten draft in German, with two circuit diagrams, and autograph additions, headed 'Versuche mit dem Oszillographen'. Two pages, on both sides of a leaf with a 7 cm closed tear. The rest of the items are in English: ITEM FOUR: Offprint (12mo, 2 pp) of paper published in 'Nature', 5 June 1937, co-written by Fürth with E. Bertl, F. Oboril and K. Sitte, titled 'Induced Radioactivity of Silver with Neutrons from Slow Deuterons'. ITEM FIVE: Offprint (12mo, 2 pp) of paper published in 'Nature', 24 April 1937, by the same four authors as Item Four, titled 'Induced Radioactivity with Neutrons from Slow Deuterons'. ITEM SIX: Offprint (8vo, 16 pp, paginated 396-411) of paper by Fürth published in 'Science Progress', July 1948, titled 'The Natural Limit of Accuracy of Observation'. Inscribed 'With best regards | RF.' ITEM SEVEN: Offprint (8vo, 23 pp, paginated 593-615) of paper by Fürth published in the 'Proceedings of the Royal Society', vol. 192, 1948, titled 'On the theory of electrical fluctuations'. ITEM EIGHT: Paper (8vo, 2 pp, paginated 727-8) by Fürth, extracted from 'Nature', 28 October 1950, titled 'Masses of Fundamental Particles'. ITEM NINE: Copy of 'Report of a Conference on Strength of Solids held at the H. H. Wills Physical Laboratory, University of Bristol, on 7-9 July 1947' (London: The Physical Society, 1948) (4to, iv + 162 pp), with Fürth's ownership signature at head of front wrap, and Birkbeck College withdrawn stamp. Loosely inserted are autograph notes (8vo, 2 pp) in English by Fürth, relating to a paper by F. C. Frank. ITEM TEN: Offprint (4to, 11 pp, paginated 23-33) of paper by J. M. Burgers, from the 'Proceedings of the Physical Society', 1940, titled 'Geometrical Considerations concerning the structural Irregularities to be assumed in a Crystal'. ITEM ELEVEN: Offprint (12mo, 2 pp) of paper published in 'Nature', 31 August 1935, by K. Sitte, titled 'Radioactivity of Potassium'.
